Several times I have been on the Heathrow connect and doors have been shut on passengers still queueing to board. This is at Hayes and Harlington and the train hasn't been full . it is not even as if passenger s are turning up to the door late. They have been waiting there allowing passengers to get off and the door has closed.

I've seen this on the Jubilee Line at peak times - a lot of passengers get off the train, then there's a "this train is ready to depart" announcement and the doors close regardless of whether anyone on the platform was able to board!

Maybe the train was late into H&H?

Yesterdays one left 30 seconds early from hayes. The only reason I got on it is the train doors opened right in front of me. Even then it was a bit Indiana Jones. The two people behind me didn't get on. Its a bit dick as it means people could be waiting 30 minutes to travel to hanwell or west Ealing.

I suggest you put your complaints to HEX directly as their drivers operate the service.

Makes sense on the underground with peak-time frequency being up to 30 trains an hour, as delays will soon build up, but not at a station with 6(?) trains per hour

Were they using all available doors? If so, this is not acceptable.

If it was a case of 'let's all try to use one door' thus causing unnecessary delay then I don't have so much sympathy.

Without more information it is very difficult to say!

Isn't Hayes & Harlington the really awkward one with regard to stopping location for 5-cars as they stop right at the front of the platform?

Countless times I saw lots of people waiting by the foot of the bridge and had to run as the train drew up to its stopping location, so naturally most congregate around the last set of doors.

(Or was that Southall I was thinking of?)

Isn't this a DOO service?

Sounds really safe!

Please, not in this thread.

If you wish to discuss the (un)safety of DOO in the context of this case, please do so in one of the existing DOO threads and make a reference to this case.

Note to all: further discussion of DOO will be deleted without exception, as such discussion has a long-standing habit of dragging threads off-topic.

I think it's Southall where the train stops all the way at the front of the platform away from the entrance bridge.

The latest incident there were four passengers trying to get on the rear door and two didnt. It was 5:35 in the morning so it was hardly busy and the train left 30 seconds early.

It sounds to me like the person operating the doors is not actually checking if all passengers have boarded yet. It is not acceptable for customers to miss their trains in such circumstances. I'd certainly report it and you should do so too.

I think it's Southall where the train stops all the way at the front of the platform away from the entrance bridge.

Both Hayes & Harlington and Southall are like that. The canopy, waiting room and benches are all beyond the rear of the train when it stops at the 4-6 car stop.

In the case of Southall, there is a huge sign (just about see it in shot) in line with the inner end of the 5th car that tells people to move right down the platform, but no one does. The 5th car is also where the horizontal and vertical gap between the train and the platform is the greatest; a low platform combined with the outside of a curve on quite a cant. This means passengers are often struggling to board there, which if they'd have moved further down to the straighter part of the platform, wouldn't be an issue. Most of the time at Southall the driver has to tell people to hurry up, and to use all doors. But people will not listen, as they want to be in the rear for Ealing Broadway or Paddington. So you have almost all seats taken and several standing in the 4th and 5th coach, while at the front I can get several seats to myself.

All Up Relief platforms served by Heathrow Connect have monitors linked to the live CCTV feeds, with station staff occasionally dispatching trains too. Nothing of the sort on the Up and Down Main, where the look back method has to be used at all stations if using those lines (also the Down Relief at Southall).

I don't know about the line to Paddington but the Heathrow bound trains at Hayes and harlington often hang out the window to watch passengers get on and off
So either the CCTV doesn't work or doesn't provide a complete view of the train.

I have heard the term 'look back method' before- in less than favourable terms. Could someone elaborate further?

Just hold the doors open until you've boarded. Simple.

I've had to do this at Stratford when TfL decided they were ready to go with people still boarding. Train doors aren't particularly strong and are designed to reopen when encountering an obstacle.

What stupid advice. Someone did that at Newcastle on a Desiro train and was dragged along the platform by her wrists.

Everyone is VERY quick to judge on here. Many a time I've been accused of shutting the doors on people and it turns out a passenger has hit the door closed button.

Admittedly, there gets to a point where you have to close the doors on passengers otherwise you would be sitting at a station all day, not many passengers have the common sense to move to a different set of doors even when there is no queue. Passengers must board through the door that provides them the most convenient exit point regardless of the loading in that vehicle.

I would argue that the platform should be cleared of waiting queuing passengers before departing especially when there were only four passengers waiting to board. According to real time trains the Heathrow connect service had less than 15 seconds between arrival and departure and it left early.

I'm sure you're aware that it is a bylaw offence.

T&W Metro have started prosecuting people under Metro bylaws for holding the doors open. Some people have been fined more than £500.

Some guy held the doors for ten minutes while waiting for his friends to get through the ticket barrier at harrow on the hill then proceeded to sit next to me and spill his beer on me. Meaning I went to work reeking of cheap stale beer. I have held the doors on a train twice. Once when a tourist accidentally kicked their shoe off a Piccadilly line train so I held it to she could get off but not on and a second time at harrow on the hill when a small child went rushing on the train in excitement and the doors started closing before the parents got on.

This sounds hard to believe. Were the police not called?!

No I was rushing towards the door of the train the door started to close so I stopped behind the yellow line. He pushed me out of the way and wedged a bag in the door which caused it to reopen I jumped on and then he kept his bag wedged in the door until his mates came along the driver then made a sarcastic comment over the tsnnoy " the passengers on the train want to get to work and holding the doors prevent this from happening" sat down spilling a drink on me in the process and then said sorry"

Oh he then started swearing when the train got held at Rayner's lane as a picadilly line train was detrained.

So ten minutes was a slight exaggeration then?

Just a bit!

If someone did that on the Northern Line in the AM peak they'd have their arms ripped off and then get clubbed to death with the stump.

What a dreadful and insensitive way to make a point. The one further up (@Permit to Travel) about committing violence was no better either.
