Cor - you wouldn't last 5 minutes in a railway messroom. That expletive was a mild one too - actually I'm not one for swearing myself.

I used to have a go at people who say things like " Yeah so I ****ing said this and they ****ing said that and you know the ****ing reason it's so ****ing bad is it's ****ing" etc etc - you know the type.

I said "Hang on a sec'. Say all that without all the ****ing and you'll get it out in half the time"

And don't - you know, don't get me - you know, started on the - you know, people who - you know, do that :angryfir:

Left Poole tonight with the 22.10 ex Weymouth - 20mph round the bend towards the crossing and there's an idiot standing in the 4ft. Whacked it into emergency and blew the horn. He drunkedly rolled over the barriers.

Phoned the signalman - told him what happened then moved off. Another idiot vaulted the barriers in front of me so I had to do the same again. Witnessed by the signalman this time No point calling the police - they, or the courts just let them go.

Since the police have had the power to issue fixed penalties (which IIRC are £80) I've found them to actually be willing to do much more. The cost of taking someone to court for trivial offences is unreasonable, which is why so many people get off with it.

Trivial offences? Mucking about on an LC isn't trivial when death or serious injury is a possibility.

True, one of the problems with law is everyone's different views, it's what I've just finished studying. But it's hardly a crime that is a threat to the public at large. Maybe the term 'quasi crime' would've been better - a crime with little or no social stigma. 'Crimes' such as food standard and many motoring offences are classed as these, but I think they are rather serious and could have implications on others than the offender.

The point is - if we splat them (and I did just that in October 2004), it's a load of delays, 'orrible job for the police, paramedics, fire brigade etc. Unit out of service, staff and probably some passengers shocked.

That's why it's a crime - and I got compensation from The Criminal Injuries Board.

Exactly. It's like the people who are calling for drugs to be legalised - they think it only affects them. But in reality, it affects everyone, from those who can be assaulted by someone who doesn't realise what they're doing because they're under the influence, to the NHS, which has to pay to treat people who have fouled their bodies up through drug-taking.

In addition to deterring people from putting themselves & others in danger, Trespass on the railway could be used for people like vandals, for whom there's not enough evidence to charge them with anything else.
