Headlights for electrostars. - TSW

I noticed that the class 377 and 387s in London Victoria to Brighton have a day running and night running headlight options. How is it decided what setting is used? Is it more like car headlights with visibility?

Just as it says, day during day light and night when it's dark.
No difference really between the two.

I got that, I was trying to say how do they determine which one to use. Do they run off a time? Is it down to drivers personal judgement?
