A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Well an extension to Skelmersdale would have been high on the agenda and Wigan Wallgate would have been discussed but then many outher potential extensions with 777s would also have been.
If one franchise ever wanted to take over portions of another franchise, before the recent changes, which bodies of Governmental transport would have had to be included in decision making?

Station name platform signage has now been fitted. (Only noticed while driving past so unable to get any photos)

A few progress photos of Headbolt Lane…and one from Liverpool Central where the signage on the walls has been updated!

EDIT:- looks like Blackburn trains won't be starting from Headbolt Lane on 24/07...they've all been pulled from RTT.

What are they doing to take that long? Why can't they just stick some buffer stops half way up the platform and just run 3/4 car, then take a weekend to connect it all up?

Unbelievable that hey need six weeks. I can only assume that some of that time is for staff training to Headbolt Lane on the 777/1s.

But Aintree is not on the Kirkby line?
You are correct. This is how it's described on the website: "A limited train service will operate every 45 minutes between Fazakerley and Liverpool Central, calling at all stations. A rail replacement bus service will operate between Kirkby, Fazakerley and Aintree".

So, still not a total closure of the line beyond the first 9 days.

The point I was making was there are no trains to/from Kirkby for 6 weeks+, with less than a week's notice.

Yesterday, today, tomorrow and Thursday, it is a bus replacement service replacing the trains between Rainford and Wigan Wallgate. Not sure why but the 'Binliners' continue to operate though.

There's works at Hindley so the line that way is shut and I guess they just didn't feel like running a train for that bit (like last time) so they're just running a bus for it.

Probably not related to Headbolt Lane

So, 507/508 units will no longer be allowed beyond Fazakerley, as the electrified third rail is being removed from Kirkby station. At the moment, they've only removed about half the platform's worth of third rail...which angles down at the end. Is it being fully removed, or just half the platform?

Anyway, the signal and route indicator attached to the bridge have been uncovered and the signal was lit up.

The buffer stop under the bridge has been removed.

Would assume battery 777s aren't far away then will they be tested or enter service straight away?

The first units will be tested down the line in the next week with driver training to start soon after
They appear to be set in Tuesday-Friday next week.
Appears there's a Class 331 style "Pathed as Diesel locomotive, trailing load 777 tonnes" pathing set for the battery use.

Does anyone know roughly how long the new station and track will take to show up in the sectional appendix, and also on the OTT live maps?

Just noticed this online...relating to the recent blockade at Kirkby to enable the track extension works. It seems platform 3 has indeed been constructed as a 'temporary' structure, as it has been built using foam blocks. Also, it gives a scheduled opening date of "late August'...so I wonder if they are gonna open it half finished to allow Blackburn trains to run from July 24th...

Foam block platform construction is however fairly commonplace, it doesn’t necessarily on its own mean something is temporary. The new Ashley Down station platforms are built almost entirely of foam blocks, as are numerous recent platform extensions around the country.

I only mentioned the temporary aspect because platforms 1 and 2 are the traditional brick retaining wall and back-fill construction, whereas platform 3 uses prefabricated foam blocks

They're on NESA as of today.
Appreciate the heads up!

Does anyone know if we're likely to see both of the Merseyrail platforms (1 & 2) in normal usage? Very curious as to the timings going forward - one has to assume that going to two track is thanks to normal operations rather than a "just in case". Would one be arriving on Platform 2 via the Down Headbolt as another departs Platform 1 on the Up Headbolt, and then vice-versa for the next arrival?

I seem to recall there will indeed be two Merseyrail units there for several minutes on each 15 minute cycle, as adding Headbolt requires adding another diagram, and Kirkby-Headbolt-Kirkby doesn't take 15 minutes running time, indeed well below that. Which means a layover at Headbolt of (a little) more than 15 minutes - but not enough not to have that extra diagram and it not to be grossly unpunctual.

That makes sense. Thanks.
