The shoring up of the embankment seems to be progressing...wooden blocks sandwiched between RSJs now extend from County Road bridge to the end of the embankment where the railway backs onto the houses on Mill Lane, with just a short gap at the arched bridge over the footpath between Mill Lane and St Chad's Church...which I believe needs waterproofing and strengthening works done on it. More earthworks on the station xite itself, with the car park seeming to take shape.

Latest newsletter for residents has dropped.

Buses replace trains between Kirkby and Rainford from 01/06 to 06/06 while bridge strengthening and Widening works take place to the stone bridge over the footpath that runs from Mill Lane to St Chad's Church.

Also from 01/06, construction will start on building the platforms for the new station.

From 16/07 until 31/08, County Road will be closed to enable the demolition and rebuilding of the railway bridge to accommodate double track. A rail replacement bus service will also be in operation during this period.

The former headbolt lane underpass is in the process of being filled in, and footpaths leading to it from Southcroft Drive are being removed. The area will be relandscaped so that its level with the road and a signalled crossing installed.

This is presumably a road 'signalled' crossing, not a railway level crossing in whatever form?

Many thanks for the update.

What does this mean? Surely not a new level crossing when they are supposed to be doing away with them? (or is it an underpass - pedestrian subway - under a road, in which case I can see the point.

A pedestrian subway. It's referred to as the "former" underpass, and there's a bridge there now, so is it even in use?

Edit: I think it's referring to this subway under Headbolt Lane itself, not the railway. It appears to be on the station land so couldn't remain, and looks like it could well be "da hangout for da local yoof" and so possibly not well used anyway.

Considering this extension has taken years, I find it rather disappointing the project isn't right to Skelmersdale. So much for levelling up.

It's a stepping stone towards Skelmersdale. Better to get the first bit in place and then extend, rather than hold up the whole scheme because some detail at Skelmersdale hasn't been agreed yet.

Lancashire council are still trying to get all the funding in place, it's a few years off being ready to go that far. At least Merseytravel are factoring it into their plans.

Skelmersdale is not in Merseyside or the Liverpool City Region so Merseytravel would not fund the whole extension to Skelmerdale, pesumably as far as Rainford Junction.

And from what I recall from a few months ago the business case for extension to Skelmersdale was not good.

Noone can predict the future, not even highly paid consultants with the best will in the world. Skelmersdale is never going to be a bustling, energising town but you have to spend some money in the North if you wish to level it up so I would recommend just putting a punt on it.

The very worst thing that would happen would be giving Skem a direct service to Liverpool which it never had (historic service via Ormskirk notwithstanding) which seems to be a good thing to me.

Lesser benefits are Wigan connections to Skem at a possible loss of Wigan - Kirkby direct services but I doubt ticket sales beyond Orrell are notable anyway.

There have been many things built in the North so I can't say the government ignore us but I will always be up for more investment.

I agree with your sentiment. The trouble is, funders look at all the schemes demanding their money and pick the one likely to have the best 'value for money', which means it needs a good business case. If it isn't good then something else that can demonstrate a better case gets the money.

I think the scrapping of HS2 to Leeds and the gross reduction of the Northern Powerhouse project makes me rather sceptical about funders' motivations and knowledge but that is for another thread.

And without being totally cynical about the "levelling up" agenda, there are better uses for the money in North West England (and no that does not include electrification to Bescar Lane and the like!)

There is a case for electrifying to Southport, to be fair, the case for it is no worse than some of the Leeds electric lines. Though one could argue that closing New Lane, Bescar Lane and Hoscar would allow for the operation of a "cleaner" timetable, though it might be another option to do some "eco-vilage" type housing development around one or more of them instead.

Once electrification via Westhoughton is complete and they finally decide whether Atherton should be wired with 25kV or 750VDC, the two diesel stubs to Headbolt Lane and Southport will become a massive operating nuisance. Much easier to wire both and use EMUs, though Headbolt Lane could be a DMU shuttle or Merseyrail on batteries you'd not want to do that with Southport as demand is much higher.

Slightly off topic but in regards to Bletchleyite's post the latest plans at the Crescent no longer show the Metro connection onto the Atherton line, so potentially TfGM have given up on that idea!

But this is the same issue thats been going on for years ending services at political borders rather than somewhere useful. I find it hard to believe a town the size of Skelmersdale is not receiving plans for a connection now, plus take the whole Merseyrail to terminate at Wigan, rather than a station in part of Kirkby.

Skelmersdale was built as an overflow town for people from Liverpool in the 1960s but with no railway connections other than a station on the outskirts at Upholland. Extension of the Merseyrail will brng massive benefits to the lives of local people with renewed historic link. This cannot be measured in a business case because it is not there yet.

This is a very good point. Business cases really look backwards to existing patterns of use. Where there is a little economic activity or it is for an area of low wage levels then the case falls. A better comparison would be with the Ormskirk line that has really created a corridor of prosperity. The performance of the new station will show this.

I'm still not convinced that a branch line would work as Ske(l)m is too spread out. Rainford Jn and Upholland, with road improvements would be nearer to many of the town than a central sta.(with some road improvements). Also the town needs to have good access to more than just L'pool.

If the town does get its branch I hope they give its terminus a good L&Y name such as "Exchange" or "Victoria"!

My personal view on this after a lot of consideration is that in a sensible world of fully integrated transport and West Lancashire being properly within the Liverpool City Region and Merseytravel area, you'd get more benefit from a bus route going from Maghull North station, up the motorway then running a figure of 8 of all Skem estates including the Concourse (or maybe two routes, one eastern and one western), then back to Maghull North, on a half-hourly basis timed to connect with trains. It would secondarily provide a good local bus service within Skem. But this isn't a sensible world so I'm for the railway even if people have to drive to it.

My definition of a useful local rail service is that you can easily walk to the station. Unfortunately Skem was designed for the motor car (which not all residents could or can afford) so very little of the town is within handy walking distance from the centre. Much as Skem needs its own station maybe it is a waste of resources to build a new branch. Since most people would drive or at least get a bus to the station, a rebuilt and expanded Upholland station might be the best option.

Maghull North is a perfect P&R for Skem, just off the motorway and a nice big free car park. It would be quicker to get there from most of Skem than to Upholland, and it has 4tph to Liverpool rather than 1tph to Headbolt Lane.

It'd be interesting to see if this sort of custom is starting to build there. Before North was built you'd have to navigate Switch Island (horrible at busy times) to get to Old Roan/Maghull or drive all the way, or go to Ormskirk which is a nicer and far less congested drive but a much longer journey time.

Picking a random estate in east Skem (Tanhouse Church), it's just twelve minutes to drive to Maghull North. Takes me longer to get to Bletchley station!

It certainly would from Tanhouse!

Your Upholland point is valid for L'pool journeys at present but the Manchester direction is also important, if Ske(l)m is to end its relative isolation.

Is Maghull nearer than Kirkby? When I lived in Skem we often would park at Kirkby and get the train into town. Headbolt Lane will be even nearer.

Nobody calls it Skelm. It's either Skelmersdale in full (typically pronounced as written, i.e. you do say the L, though some people don't), or abbreviated to Skem (again pronounced as written).

Maghull North is a couple of miles nearer, yes, and is probably a safer place to leave your car! Also much quicker as the journey is almost all motorway. Headbolt Lane would be about the same as Kirkby proper. It is physically closer but the road layout makes it about the same as Kirkby in terms of how far you'd drive (because to any of them you'd take the M58 to J1).

A dedicated bus-train interchange service was attempted by LCC and MPTE in 1979. Operated by Ribble and numbered 395/396, it operated between Skem (and its environs) and Kirkby station, connecting with the Merseyrail service to Liverpool Central. It took exactly an hour between Skem bus station and Liverpool Central (roughly a five-minute interchange at Kirkby). I don't know if through-ticketing was available - doubtful?

Whilst the service was well-intentioned, it was deemed a failure because it didn't really save much time against the 305/345 through-bus service between Skem and Liverpool (one of them operated through Kirkby too). Perhaps the 395/396 services' legacy is that's where the seed of MPTE's aspirations to reach Skem by Merseyrail came from?

I would like to see the Skem extension happen in the next ten years - the Headbolt Lane extension is a small, yet significant, step for the project. Unfortunately, there's two disparate authorities (LCR and West Lancs) and an unsympathetic central government involved - it will take a miracle to get the funding. If Skem had been included in the metropolitan county of Merseyside, as originally envisaged (Southport got the nod instead), the rail link would probably have been created by now.

Progress report 11/06/22

The underpass under Headbolt Lane is halfway through being bricked up. The footpaths on the Southcroft Drive side have been dug up and extra material is being dropped to fully raise the land to road level.

The foundations for the platform on the ticket office side of the station are being laid. Nothing yet on the opposite Liverpool bound side.

The stone bridge over Millbrook & the Millennium Green footpath has been widened and waterproofed. Seems to me like they've fitted a new deck...but difficult to be certain from a moving train.

The trackbed retaining walls seem to be fully in place now and some new ballast laid.

The July Modern Railways has three pages on the scheme. Haven't read it yet.
(oops, I originally said June)
