Could anyone identify the head code of this class 25 at Maplethorpe , prob late 60s

The "E" indicates that it originated outside the Eastern Region (the fact it is a class 25, which the ER never had any of until it merged with the NER, supports this). But I can't help you with the rest.

probably a summer Saturday service, of whcih there were many to the east coast right up until the 70s (although for obvious reasons those to Mablethorpe itself ceased in 1970)

1E91 was the 0822 from Derby on summer Saturdays in 1966. The train only ran for one more year after that. From 1968 the only loco hauled train to/from Mablethorpe was the Sheffield.

The box at Mablethorpe was towards the north end of the station and the line on to Louth had been close in 1960, so (as said) this looks like the loco is running round. The end of the loco seen would be against the train on arrival, so unless the loco had had to run round earlier in the journey, the headcode is probably from a previous working. However, Class 25 were not that common on Class 1 workings.

A regular working on summer Saturdays was a Manchester-Yarmouth, operated with a pair of 25s which handed over to a 31 at Lincoln, with a balancing working handing over the other way (a different 31 bringing it in for the 25s to take on). I don't know whether the stock spent the week in Norfolk.

As I rexcall there was quite a procession of exotica from Shefiield and Manchester to the East Coast resorts. Most worked through and returned the sdame day, but the Manchester Yarmouth was the last of the morning (and the balancing working the first back), hence the loco change.

Very popular as the Manchester crew often let us "cab" the 25s during their layover in Lincoln Central
