Haywards Heath to Chichester

Hi

Does anyone know why Chichester to Haywards Heath Off Peak Fare Single (with Network Gold Card) is £1.35 more expensive than the exact same ticket the other way?

I have checked BRFares but found no answer.

You can check for next weekend, for example Saturday going to Chichester and returning the next day.

It does sometimes happen that tickets towards London are priced differently to tickets away from London. Not that common but there are other instances.

To do with perceived traffic flows - probably at some stage in the past

Of course, sometimes it is cheaper to get a return ticket in the "opposite" direction, and only use the Return portion - in the direction you want to go.

If a Network Gold Card (GOLDC) holder is travelling from Haywards Heath to Chichester on a Saturday and returning from Chichester to Haywards Heath the next day, then a £8.50 GOLDC Off-Peak Day Single Haywards Heath - Chichester and a £9.85 GOLDC Off-Peak Day Single Chichester - Haywards Heath, total £18.35, is not the best option.

A £13.85 GOLDC Off-Peak Return Haywards Heath - Chichester is valid outward by any train on a Saturday, returning on any day within a month with no time restrictions at weekends.

More generally, it is quite common for tickets in South-East England to be more expensive in the direction of heaviest flow: towards London in the morning and away from London in the afternoon. The Off-Peak Day Singles discussed above are only a few pence less than the corresponding Off-Peak Day Returns and these return tickets follow this pattern.
