Little better than a Parliamentary level of service - worked a Class 153 with not many passengers.

It's down to four bus services each day to Leyburn now. There just isn't the population to merit a train service; expansion of the Wensleydale Railway as a tourist attraction would take a fortune to renew the infrastructure,

Its should be noted that the bus service, which has been drastically reduced by spending cuts, runs only to Hawes and Gayle.
The railway went on from Hawes to Hawes Junction, now Garsdale, on the Settle and Carlisle line so it could have enjoyed some of the increased use the S&C is getting.
Like many others I was forced into a car by bus deregulation where my last bus at 11pm became a last bus at 5.45pm.
I have to use the car it I want to come back late.

What's the condition of the trackbed between Redmire and Hawes? West of Hawes the tunnel at Mossdale is not in very good nick!

Very true. The best solution to the tunnel, might be to demolish it and create a large cutting.
Apart from the tunnel there so not appear to be too many intrastructure problems to reopening Garsdale to Hawes as a long siding for a shuttle service, or possibly with passive provision for slightly more in time.

It would be a good trans Pennine route for biomass from Port of Tyne to Fiddlers Ferry and Ironbridge power stations when converted. A passenger service could then be introduced on the back of a freight service. How about a Middlesbrough-Blackpool service via Northallerton, Garsdale, Hellifield, Blackburn and Preston?

Personally, I feel that if the line was still open, we would see Carlisle to Northallerton/York services. A 158 could be a possibility, as they would most likely to on the same par as the S&C services, and worked out of Neville Hill

just after Hawes part of the embankment is now gone to make way for a football field (click here for the picture) :-x and the bridge just after Hawes is gone, sections of embankment are now farm land, cut up by roads and buildings and bits of rubble is taking over the line and it jut repeats over and over again all the way to Redmire

How long is Mossdale Tunnel? If its the same length as Salterhebble (92 Yards) then a 150 yard cutting should do (the extra yards make up the strenth lost, so to speak).

Its a good job that its not the short Burbage Tunnel, as its been capped at the Buxton end with earth spilling out and the thing been used as a sheep shelter.

The route for such traffic would surely have been via Penrith, Kirkby Stephen East and Darlington over the Eden Valley and Stainmore lines.

I'm sure when I looked around New Year there was a half-decent service from one of the S and C stations (forget which) to Hawes - reason for looking it up being I was looking into the possibility of staying in the area for a couple of nights at New Year which never happened in the event due to the extremely bad weather last winter.

Has that gone in the past 6 months?

Given Wensleydale is well known one woud think there would be cause for a bus link to the S and C. The attitude being taken this year by the South Downs National Park in improving Sunday buses is what's needed, not reductions...

Damn spending cuts. People of Tatton, you know what you have to do (shame we don't all have a say....) ;)
