Haverford West Railway Bridge.

While walking underneath the railway bridge which crosses the River Cleddau near Haverford West I noticed what appeared to be pulley wheels and buffer stops on one of the bridge piers.(see attached photo). It seems that this was part of the original lifting bridge built because ship access was required to the town quays. It was a condition of the bridges construction that it should be raised at least once a year apparently a practice that was carried out with some ceremony until the mid sixties. Can any member of the forum provide a link to any site with photos of the bridge or the ceremony.

Thankyou for the link, John. It explains the ceremony very clearly. Next time I am in Haverford West I will go into the museum or library to see if any photos of the bridge or the ceremony in the sixties have been archived.
