I ended up not buying the ticket as I had a last minute change of plan. Yorkie does say that if you can get NRE to show it as an itinerary which Barnham to Margate does show via St P then it must be valid however I didn't search for Soton via Barnham to Margate, only Barnham to Margate.

OK - so those weren't Route:Via Barnham fares.

When you mentioned NRE offering the HS1 route for the 'normal' fare for Barnham-Margate in post # 27 above do you mean the via London fare ( which wouldn't be surprising ) or the not London fares ( which would) ?

I was just checking it wasn't offering the journey as multiple tickets required which wouldn't mean it would be a sensible route.

One assumes Barnham to Kent routes would be the same as Soton via Barnham to Kent routes because you have to go via Barnham first...

It was the via London fare. I was checking the prices were the same for different routes between Barnham and Kent and many of them were the same including the HS1 itinerary but oddly the Redhill Tonbridge route gave no price.

Just a reminder that it's best not to post details of cheap fares with 'suspect routeings' on here as it's a sure fire way of getting them corrected as the train companies keep a very close eye on this forum.

Back when I was a Canterbury commuter I had a period season ticket, something like Mottisfont to Martin Mill which I got specifically to travel on HS1 with. Never had any issue on that side, though staff at London Bridge on the Southern side had a massive problem with it. At the time I was fully aware of the inconsistency with that exclusion being applied to the Barnham route in the electronic data (it was shown in RJIS) but not shown in the Routeing Guide. Happy days.

There are still several flows which significantly undercut the price of a St Pancras to Ashford ticket that are valid via HS1. The best ones are the ones which wouldn’t raise an eyebrow with any but the most eagle eyed of inspectors.
