Hello, sorry for my english, I think ive been charged the wrong fares

Knowing that the ticket from walthamstow to victoria is 3.70£ on peak and I took the southern to gatwick off peak so 9.50£ (no gatwick express that day due to the strike)

I think I made a mistake by tapping in the national rail entry to join the underground.
Ask for a refund and tfl told me that Ive been charged correctly.

Wanted to know what I did wrong. Thanks

You have been charged correctly, I'm afraid. As you have used one card and touched in a Walthamstow Central before 09:30 you have been charged for Walthamstow Central to Gatwick Airport at the peak rate. The two sections of the journey have been joined together because there is an 'out of station interchange' (OOSI) at Victoria. To avoid this you would have needed to do something to separate the two sections - there is a method using the gatelines but it is a bit complex and I don't remember the details.

Even if you normally just use one contactless card, it's worth having another or even an Oyster card to get the best fare on these journeys near the end of the morning peak. Of course, it works the other way round if you start your afternoon journey at 15.59 or just before.

In afternoon as long as you touch in before 4, you get the off peak fare, and from memory Gatwick to London has no PM peak time restriction on oyster or contactless.

I think the way to “break” the OSI is to touch out on tube gateline, turn around and touch back in, then go through, turn around again and touch back out, then proceed to national rail gateline and touch in there

I have read somewhere that you can "break" the OSI by exiting the station, touching in on a bus, alighting straightaway and re-entering the station. Never tried it so I don't know if it works.

The downside of that is that you pay for the bus!

I think this is true but surely it's far better just to use two different cards? Either an oyster card and then contactless or two different contactless cards.

Thinking about it, doesn't Apple Pay scramble the card number, so you could theoretically use your physical card for the first leg and then apple pay for the second?

As long as the destination is in zone 1.

As for breaking the OSI, yes a TfL bus will do it but you might pay for the bus if a cap doesn't come into play. You need to be very careful going out-in-out or in-out-in. It can work in some circumstances, but if fares aren't set favourably for the intermediate journey then you'll end up being charged more.
