Havant to Gatwick

Until very recently, I could have sworn that the fares from Havant to Gatwick were set the same as from Portsmouth, in that fares via Barnham were set by Southern (eg £15.60 off peak day return) and via Clapham Junction by SWT (£35.20 off peak day return). In addition there being no through fare via Guildford and Dorking.

Now I see that the only fares from Havant are set by Southern (eg £15.60 off peak day return) but via any permitted. What are the permitted routes?

Looking at the Routeing Guide, the permitted routes are via Horsham, or via Brighton & Hassocks, or via Brighton & Lewes.

So effectively via Barnham.

However if you go on the Southern website and request an off peak day return for today, coming back, say after 21:00, the last service it offers you is the 23:18 GWR service via Dorking and Guildford, which is very useful but would seem to go against the guide.

I would like to know what's happening there, too. I was thinking this could be related to the ASLEF overtime ban on Southern but it doesn't seem to be. I couldn't spot any relevant easement either.

I think that it quite likely is to do with the overtime ban. The Southern website says that it has arranged for ticket acceptance via various routes, including via Gatwick Airport and Guildford.

If you look at journeys at random evenings in August, the last return journey valid on the return ticket is the 2213 direct Gatwick-Havant train.

From the Southern website page giving travel advice in the event of weekday disruption:

I didn't think the train planning Web Sites took into account travel being allowed by other companies trains when not otherwise allowed under normal circumstances.

What are the respective distances for the routes?

This route is showing up for 27 July whereas the Southern website implies they're looking at meeting only a 48hr horizon for ASLEF overtime ban changes.

I think it's ~10 miles further going via Guildford.

The last leg of the journey, from Petersfield to Havant, is by rail replacement bus. Non-rail legs are stripped off the start and end of the journey before calculating the permitted routes, so we are effectively looking at the routes for Gatwick to Petersfield, which *is* valid via Guildford (indeed it's the shortest route).
