Hi ,

I recently completed my train driver assessment , I passed stage 1 and then passed the computer tests on stage 2 . I wasnt put onto the interview stage (Multi-modal interview) because one of my computer stage tests didnt meet this TOC standard . I was told that it was a pass for most other companys . They said i dont have to wait 6 months to start applying for other train driver jobs, so im guessing it doesnt count as a fail ? Has anyone else been in the position ? Or have any advice ?

Hi there,

It won't count as a fail, as you still passed. (Your lives are still intact)

When applying for other companies, and if they accept your pass, you'll need to sit the Situational Judgement Exercise and Multi-Modal Interview as part of their Stage 2 process, but probably not the other tests.

They might however get you to sit the computerised test that let you down again, depending on how you scored compared to what they accept.

Thanks for the reply . Its not to bad then , a lot better than losing a life and if anything i have some idea of what to expect next time round . Just gonna have to start applying again and hope i get through the application stage

Hi Alan.

Don't give up hope. This was exactly the same position I found myself in last year (although it was under the old assessment process). I applied for a trainee driver position with Northern, passed all the paper tests but then managed to achieve a borderline pass on the DTG reactions test. As such, I could not progress to the Competency based interview and my application was as good as dead.

Northern told me that I had used up one life and I could not apply to them again for another six months. However, the assessor at DB Schenker (where I sat my tests) informed me that I had actually passed, just not to Northern's standard. My results were recorded as a pass on the national database of persons sitting the assessments.

Six months later, to the day DB Schenker advertised for trainee drivers. I applied and, as my previous results were counted as a pass, all I had to do was sit two extra tests and the CBI interview. After that, an interview with my Area Production manager and a medical. I started on my trainee course on the 6th January this year.

So don't give up hope mate, just because you didn't pass with one TOC/FOC, doesn't write your chances off for good.

Thanks for letting me know Jim , its good to know someone else has been in the same situation . Im gonna keep looking for the next trainee position and not give up . Even though i didn't get the last job hopefully the experience will help me in some way .

Well done on getting the job and this shows that you should never give up . I'm hoping i can go and do the same as you now

I'll echo Jamesb1974's post, keep trying with other TOCs. Again before the change of the tests I took the 1st stage assessments with FGW last May & my Group Bourdon score was a borderline pass & FGW were only accepting "Good Passes".
I applied to Southern last August who were happy to accept my scores as apparently the thing that let my GB score down was my speed apparently my accuracy was 100% so I started with them last November & have just passed my rules course so just keep trying.
