I think I can shed some light on this one...
As the OP stated, it was an evening service, meaning the red on the VT unit looks quite similar to the brown on the front of the XC unit... Also, XC units frequently appear with one or two VT Grey/white striped doors, following work at CZ... These combined would lead the OP to believe he saw a VT 221.

In low light, the red and brown do look extremely similar...
