Good Day All.

From RTT I see there is headcode 618R, from Tyne S.S., which terminates at HPL approx 22:45 some nights. There is an early departure as 621U the following morning back to Tyne S.S.

RTT suggests it is loco hauled, trailing load 2600 tons.

I'm not in a position to go and see it, so can anyone enlighten me as to:

1) where/what is Tyne S.S.? Part of Tyne yard?

2) is there not a security risk (to the train) if it's parked in the station?

3) what does the trailing load consist of and why does it travel to HPL for the night and head back to Tyne S.S. 6 hours or so later?

Many thanks - Morpethcurve

Looks like an engineering train (used to be known as a ballast train) to me - probably to work inside of a possession in the Hartlepool area. It won't necessarily be "parked" in the station, Hartlepool is used as the point nearest to where the possession is taken from. It may be the station area or somewhere nearby. It returns to Tyne from the possession when the work is finished

Because it says 2600 tonnes that doesn't mean it conveys that - in fact its highly unlikely the trailing load is anything near that. 2600 tonnes is the "timing" load, i.e. its timed for a train conveying that trailing load.

Tyne SS I think stands for Sorting Sidings, a legacy of the good old days when trains were mostly wagon-load and had to be made up for various destinations i.e. sorted.

S.S. is short for Sorting Sidings - a posh way of saying yard!!

The train is an HOBC* (High Output Ballast Cleaner), which is one of three
trains which are based at Tyne yard for major engineering/renewal work in
the North East over the coming months.

... and why does it travel to HPL for the night and head back to Tyne S.S. 6 hours or so later?
It doesn't - Hartlepool will just be the start/end point of the engineering work.

* for the pendants, that specific train may be a MOBC (Medium Output
Ballast Cleaner), as one of those is based at Tyne yard, too.

Quite a lot of building work going on at Tyne Yard, so is this going to be a permanent location for P'way trains?

As far as I know, yes.

HOBCs which used to be based at Carlisle and Doncaster now run
from Tyne yard, and there are daily supply trains to Tyne from
Doncaster and Mountsorrel, and onwards to Carlisle and Millerhill

Good news for Tyne Yard then. Bit more interest on the scene as well I suppose.

It will be the high/medium out put train working out of Tyne Yard. The train wont park in the station overnight but will work to an from the worksite which must be close to Hartlepooh. Around dawn it should trundle back up to Tyne for replenishment/unloading.

yes ( till something changes ) .
the feedback we are getting from management ;) is that NR is very happy with the service they are getting from FL and DB .

there may be more work on its way , too ! ( not just ballast )

DB took on drivers at Tyne Yard recently as well, so if there are more jobs in the pipeline, that is only a good thing.

I think we need to differentiate between infrastructure freight i.e. ballast workings and freight for private industry.
When I were a lad™, the latter used to be referred to as
'revenue earning' freight but since privatisation, all freight,
including engineers workings, has become revenue earning,
so the FOCs are not as keen to go for new 'real' freight contracts
when there is such a large (and increasing) captive market
for infrastructure/engineering trains...
