Hi everyone, does anyone know what the issue is with the Harrogate line? I was meant to be on the 10:39 to Leeds from HRS, but it has been cancelled and now the 11:09 is showing delayed. Thanks.

Northern’s website states “Due to a safety inspection of the track between York and Harrogate all lines are blocked”.

Northern not providing any alternatives?
Not sure. It’s a 25 minute walk to HRS station to find out and I didn’t have the time as needed to be at MIA for 13:00. It’s annoying that the Northern App let me buy the ticket without warning me.

I see it was cancelled, and the next train appears to have been the 1155 LNER to Leeds, which would trigger 100% Delay Repay.

Depending on what ticket(s) you held, and whether your taxi made your onward booked train from Leeds, you may be entitled to a part refund or delay compensation.

(For my airport journeys, I always allow for a 2-hour delay not causing me to miss a flight, and spend time in a lounge; so far I have a 100% record)

The forum's site may be a better bet; providing the industry data does know about the delay, it will warn you:

Great thanks, I’m heading to Manchester Airport, so an expensive taxi to Leeds it is…
Simply forget using train to get to airport....it's absolutely not reliable at all. My recommendation would be to drive and park up at airport....

As mentioned above, I allow enough of a buffer that a 2 hour delay wouldn't cause a missed flight. I've not missed one yet. Delays above that threshold are extremely rare and insurance would pay out.

Doesn't seem the most helpful recommendation given:
a) cars are also inherently unreliable due to traffic.
b) car parking costs at airports are very high.
c) Many people cannot drive/ don't have a car etc.
d) the environmental cost of driving is very large...
e) the train is often more convenient to airports anyway

And I could probably go on...

Reasonable alternatives for completing the journey in good time, in the event of incurring a breakdown or accident on a motorway, are less likely.

100% all good travel insurance would cover if you planned a train to arrive in good time.

I believe the threshold would be having 2 hours between arriving and departing at the airport.

However, I would allow a minimum of 3 hours*, so that a 2-hour train delay would not cause a missed flight (* with hand luggage only & express security; I'd allow even more time if I had checked bags and/or without fast track).

This is the second day in a row that this line has had problems yesterday it a track defect somewhere in the Pannal area which resulted in the service being canned for at least 3 hours or more. Just recently the service on this line has been appalling recently if it's not signalling/track problems it's unit failures/shortages also not helped by the tight crew/unit diagrams which means even if something fairly minor happens the whole service goes into a complete meltdown.

+1 to this, although I allow this 2h+ time to when *checkin* closes, whether train or car travel. I've had more near misses by road than by rail in 25-30 years of business travel (but somehow still 100% checkin record), across 20+ countries.

Trains are not reliable....it really is that simple. The network in the north is poorer today than it was pre COVID.....and I am far better qualified than most on here because I actually work in the industry. I won't even give family and friends tickets out.....

I disagree. I use the train to Stansted when I have to fly to Europe on business. A direct train from my local station is very convenient. It's also cheaper for my employer than driving and paying the exorbitant parking fees, and the platforms are directly under the terminal building.
I can work or relax on the train.

Of course I do check that there aren't any significant issues on the railway on the day, and would drive if there were.

The last few foreign trips I’ve made involved trains to and from the airport with no issues.

I work in the industry too, and I profoundly disagree that trains are inherently unreliable.

5 of the last 12 threads on here involve some sort of service issue in the north.

Which is a flawed metric to use, as hardly anyone starts a thread to say "I just travelled by train and it ran as timetabled".

So what.....there is a general opinion within this forum that service provision in the north is poor.....and as an insider I generally agree with that opinion. I will absolutely guarantee you that between now and the end of this year, there will be a load more threads started which are in the same area as the one we are currently discussing. I will stick a bet on one of them will be relating to this Sunday coming when there will be scores of cancellations on the Northern network due to staffing issues as both conductors ( and increasingly drivers ) are not making themselves available to work
