A Saturday in January - must arrive mid-day
06:56 (arr)12:01 5h 05m 3 changes.
Over £100 day ret shown on the NRE website just now :(
Splitting it though; £23.40 Harrogate>Preston (CD ret) and £20 Preston>Glasgow (S out + back) is the best option at the moment.
It goes Harrogate>Leeds>Manchester>Preston>Glasgow. Very long winded!

Are there any other cheaper options which NRE doesn't show?

Can't believe there's nothing Harrogate-York-(Edinburgh?)-Glasgow...is this just a weekend thing? Am I missing something??

Location
What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
This is what I've found, if you are willing to arrive circa 13:00.

Harrogate - Horsforth CDR £6.80
Horsforth - Glasgow Central Anytime Return "Route Appleby" £55.40

Total = £62.20

Depart Harrogate at 07:59 Arriving Leeds City at 08:36
Depart Leeds City at 08:49 Arriving Carlisle Citadel at 11:34
Depart Carlisle Citadel at 11:47 Arriving Glasgow Central at 13:01

Alternatively, have you tried splitting Harrogate - Leeds, Leeds - Manchester or Preston, and Preston - Glasgow as well? Or Harrogate - Bradford Interchange, Bradford Interchange - Preston or Glasgow Central?

I wonder if the lack of cheaper tickets for travel via York is because Virgin Trains East Coast have only released Advance tickets for dates up to and including Friday 15th January.

Also, there are engineering works between Darlington and Newcastle over the weekends of 9th/10th and 16th/17th January. On the Sundays (so the Saturdays may be the same), non-Leeds East Coast trains seem either to be running only between London and Darlington (and intermediate stations), or doing London-Scotland via York, Northallerton, Hartlepool, Sunderland and Newcastle. Cross Country are running an hourly Newcastle-Durham-Darlington bus, and Transpennine express are running hourly between York and Newcastle.

Thanks, the later option means missing stuff my pal and I want to see :- so not really an option. Nice trip over the moors though! Info about the line engineering explains a lot.

The 5-hr trip there and back is way too long; may now go up on the Friday and stay overnight.

Quite surprised how poorly Glasgow is served from the east of England, but as alluded to could just be an one-off. Wait and see what cheap tickets - if any - become available (Leeds/York northwards) for the Fri or Sat. Thanks!

Have you thought about drive to Shipley and get the 06:32 up the S&C to Carlisle then 09:11 Carlisle to Glasgow arrive 10:29

Alternatively you can get a £17.50 advance Shipley to Glasgow via Bradford and Preston on your 12:01 arrival

Driving I'd go all the way! Nope, there's a few beers in this and I'm going from Manchester via Preston and was hoping my pal from Harrogate could do the trip from there and we meet up at noon. But they won't want to spend over 5 hours on a train to spend 5 in Glasgow and another 5+ back :(

Pity the Settle/Carlisle train isn't earlier, that would solve everything!

As it is it's either stay overnight or abandon the whole thing and I'll just go up for the day. No flights Man/Gla on a Saturday either which there are midweek and a good alternative, seeing as Braehead's nearer the airport than central Glasgow.
