Harringay Park Junction Signal Box

Can anyone tell me if the signal box at Harringay Park Junction is
still operational

In the early 1980's I was good friends with a releif signalman (Ken Walters)
and spent many happy hours watching trains pass the above signal box
as well as the boxes at South Tottenham , Leyton High Road & Woodgrange
Park . I have looked on Google Earth and found Woodgrange & Leyton have
gone with Totteham and Harringay remaining so would like to take a trip
up from Grays and visit my old stomping ground .

If anyone has any information they can pass on i'd be very greatful ,
and if you have any pictures you could pass on that would be even
more of a bonus .

Here's some shots of both Harringay Park Jn and South Tottenham boxes, both of which are alive and well. In fact, Tottenham was refurbished in recent years (although the platform has been cut-back outside it now)

Apart from parts of the GOBLIN and around Kew East Junction, are there any other areas where there are semaphores still used in north London? A suggestion has been made that there may be semaphores in the "back roads" in the Willesden complex north of Stonebridge Park. Oh! And also at Greenford of course!

Yes, they're still at use in Stonebridge Park. But very difficult to photograph. They're controlled by Willesden Carriage Shed Sth SB.

I have done an extensive trawl through the internet and can't find even one shot of the semaphores operated by Willesden Carriage Sidings South Signal Box! I have found three small shots of 87001 near the 'box, and in one you can see the rodding for presumably signals. Frustrating!

So, apart from the GOBLIN, Kew East Junction, Greenford, and the dark depths of Willesden, are there any other semaphores in London?

There used to be on the Acton Branch, but I'm not sure if they're still There. The signalboxes at Dudding Hill Jn, Neasden Jn, Acton Canal Wharf and Acton Wells Jn are still operational. I'm sure Neasden Jn had some semaphores until recently at least.

Yes, they're still at use in Stonebridge Park. But very difficult to photograph. They're controlled by Willesden Carriage Shed Sth SB.

Willesden Carriage Shed North signal box also controls two semaphore signals: CN15 and CN25. The former is visible from Bakerloo Line trains between Stonebridge Park and Wembley Central stations. I doubt whether CN25 is visible, as trains will be somewhat below the signal as they deal with the underpass.

CN15, which controls entrance to the Down Carriage Line wash plant, is a very difficult "pull" and took me some weeks to get the better of: this is due to the distance (a wire adjuster has been thoughtfully provided in the box). The signal is not visible from the box, so there is a repeater on the block shelf.

CN25, controlling access from the Down Carriage Line to the Shunting Line outside the box, is a bit easier and within sight of the signaller. Still not a nice pull though: personally, I mount the frame before stepping off with the released catch handle in my hands.

Funny you should mention that as I was only noticing some of this as I passed by on the Silverlink Swansong 2 tour last weekend. I think I'll have to try and arrange a visit.

I don't own a digital camera - will have to borrow one from my wife! You'll have to wait a little bit as well, I'm on nights this week. And do remember that these are shunting semaphores, so a bit smaller than traditional semaphores.

The WCSS semaphores are CS1, CS2&3 and CS5&8. 2&3 and 5&8 are 'stacked': 2&3 are on the Down Carriage Line controlling a cross-over (to the Up line for wrong-direction movements), 5&8 are on the Up Carriage Line just before the same cross-over. CS1 is again a pesky signal some distance from the box on the DCL. (Wire adjuster and repeater on block shelf again.) I think it's there to protect wrong-direction shunts onto DCL from the UCL through the aforementioned cross-over.

I think all these signals are visible when travelling on the tube between Stonebridge Park and Harlesden.

Cheers UCL! The "semaphores", actually ground shunt signals, used by Underground trains at Harrow & Wealdstone sidings, and thus not that far from Willesden, were removed in the 1980s.
