Hard drive - photo name order

Hello all,

On my old external hard drive, used for photo's and videos, if I saved a edited photo as, say DSC_0001-1.jpg, it would automatically put itself next to DSC_0001.jpg. I always do this as I can compare the original and the edited file in the photo viewer and switch back and forth to see if the edited file looks right.

However this hard drive is rather full, so I've got another external hard drive. However, when I save the edited file, like as above, it automatically gets chucked to the end (so the last file might be DSC_0077.jpg, then after will be DSC_0001-1.jpg). So to compare the original and edited file, I have to go out of that photo folder and go back in again, then it will but it in alphabetical/numerical order.

Not the end of the world but annoying to keep going out and back in the folder for it to organize itself, so why is it not doing it in the first place? Is there something in the folder settings I need to do?

Does pressing F5 to refresh the window not work?

I can't say specifically, because I don't know what software you're on, but you could see if it's possible to change or disable the auto arrange properties of folders within the drive / drives.

There's lots of info on the net about it, but I've found it next to impossible to stop windows arranging pictures, music files etc in whatever way it likes on portable drives, despite adjusting a few settings.

Could you be sorting by some other method (e.g. last edit date) rather than by name for that folder? If this is Windows, the settings are remembered per folder (buried away in the registry)

This is my system; one date coded folder for each month and within that each picture is numbered up from 001 strictly in order of being taken:

Hmm the folder is set to organize everything by name.

Peter - I do yes, but if I re-name '01.jpg' to '02.jpg', it will still throw 02.jpg to the end. I do mine numerically but it doesn't seem to do it on my hard drive unless I refresh. My folder names will automatically sort themselves out though in A-Z order

F5 is forcing a refresh. Changing the sort order is also likely to fix it

It's universal too.
Try it in Chrome, Edge, anywhere around Windows and it'll refresh the current view.

You can add and remove data columns and you can sort by any of them. In the specific case mentioned, sorting by name is all that would be needed, and one easy way to do that by choosing a list view (rather than icons/thumbnails) and then clicking the column header. Repeat clicks toggle between ascending and descending order. You can do it with any column to sort by that bit of metadata.
