Planning our anniversary holiday to Germany, and from being in Berchtesgaden a few years ago, saw there was a direct service from Hamburg.
Is this the longest train journey within Germany without changes? Google is singularly unhelpful :(

In terms of distance as the crow flies between the two stations, probably. In terms of time, definitely not. IC 61479 and IC 2327 for example take longer.

The longest service that comes to my mind is the Mondays only IC2013 from Leipzig Hbf to Oberstdorf in the Allgaü, which also features 2x218 diesel hydraulic traction for the final section! It takes just under 14 hours, and given the route it takes it's hard to imagine anyone taking it for the whole journey.

The summer only, and soon to be history extension of the CNL471 Berlin-Zurich sleeper service to start from the Baltic seaside resort of Ostseebad Binz also takes just under 14 before crossing the German-Swiss border near Basel.

There are also some other weekend-only trains that make a 12 or so hour journey across Germany before ending up in Binz.

There might be other mega-routes which are even longer in germany, but those are the two that spring to mind as real oddities. They each have one end of their route on a single track branchline which normally only sees 2 car multiple units.

Binz 17.38 - Basel BBF 7.06 > IC 60471

In the past (in the 80's) almost all IC from Hamburg to Koeln drove further to Muenchen. In the Ruhrarea sometimes over Duisburg; sometimes over Wuppertal. 1073 kilometers in 10,5 hours.

The Berchtesgaden Hbf (8.28) - Hamburg Altona (18.44) train is still running as IC 2082; RE till Freilassing.

That was true in the 90s too, they were advertised as Hagen-Wuppertal Essen-Duisburg Koeln-Koblenz at Hamburg, and if you wanted to use them for Muenchen the fare was higher than the direct ICE.

Oh, and I did the Berchtesgaden one in 1999. Was an enjoyable journey in one of the 2+1 seated semi compartment seconds. I do like proper trains on little branches - I guess the St Ives HSTs vaguely compare.

I think-but wont do the maths to calculate, its the inner german section of the overnight (use it as long as you can-till nov/dec!) of the CNL Zürich-Praha, thus from Basel/bad to Bad Schandau.
Before it still had the section for Denmark, it would also have Basel/Bad to Flensburg.
Surely your German colleagues on the DSO-forum=Drehscheibe-online, will know it right away.

One of the longest is the IC that runs from the Rhur to Innsbruck down the Rhine, then onto Lindau. It's formed of OBB stock and the most it can offer catering is a trolley from Lindau to Innsbruck. I drove passed it on Sat as it was coming down the Rhine.

That is the IC going to Bregenz and final destination Inssbrueck Hbf. On german soil it is for 8,5 hours. Train ends and starts in Muenster im Westfalen. Trainnumbers are IC 118 and 119.
