Halloween: Spooktastic or pointless?

Halloween is a commercial operation, in line with Christmas and Easter.

My local Sainsbury's has reduced various chocolate things for halloween, including digestives, so I'm not complaining!

I haven't seen anyone trick or treating for several years, although perhaps I'm just lucky? At school on the day after halloween, I'd hear about how various peoples' houses had been egged. :roll:

Even so, it has certainly been popularised there and made its way into the mainstream culture far earlier than here. I think this is probably because of the influence of US TV, just like The Simpsons!

Get your calendar out and you will notice they are typically 6 weeks apart
If the Greetings Card companies had their way it would be every week
Add to that all the personal events (birthdays, anniversaries, etc) then it pretty much is every 4 weeks

Scots get conned at New Year
Shops that open on the 1st and 2nd of January for just a few hours to offload their tat
The sensible (using the word cautiously) then seek out the January sales over the next few days
However just a few months earlier these same items would have been that price
Christmas is coming, get ready for those price hikes...

Waste. Of. Time. Second most pointless day of the year, to a certain other day I hate.

I was given no choice but to T-or-T once, aged about 10, and I hated it. Absolutely hated it. One good thing about being on Uni campus is that you can usually get away with it!

Good idea! Wish I could do something like that. Instead, I have to travel with some odious morons called CrossCountry (through a place called Sheffield; you may have heard of it?)

Outfits for both the kids, a "sexy witch" outfit for her, some decorations and a load of overpriced Halloween themed food. All I got was a £1 "Ghost Pirate" mask. :roll:

At the other extreme, the 15-year old slags (also semi-unknown) who seem to have had too many sweeties already. I am tempted this year to hand out condoms and a good talking to. ("This is awful chewing gum!")

Im lucky since the dog bark's rather loudly if people knock, and we aviod being in the room next to the door so, they think we are out

To those saying it - like Christmas and all the others - are over commercialised, well, just don't buy the stuff then. You can have fun without money.

I think it's good. It splits the year up and lets people have a bit of fun. Now some teens take advantage of that to be antisocial gits but then they would anyway.

As one of my friends put it, Halloween is "christmas for metalheads". We get to dress up in a grim fashion and air our satanic tendencies. My house mates and I kitted out the cellar as a truly fantastic spooky dungeon for our house party last Saturday.

Usually Haloween is special for me as it was my Birthday yesterday. In my opinion its spooktastic as you see kids dressed up in spooky costumes. When I left home last night to see a film in Ipswich I literally saw a kid coming towards me dressed up as "Grim Reaper".

We had a fair few kids around last night (we didn't hide this time!) and they were all well behaved and under supervision by grown ups.

However, one group did get rather cheeky and came back twice - but the wife still gave them some more sweets. They didn't seem to care that they'd been busted!

The plus side (or downside depending on how you look at it) was a load of sweets left over, which I've been going through today.

I had to be on the defensive making my way through Bristol at 23:00 last night waiting for the bus back to Bath. Not one minute would pass without some slut in some stupid costume saying something suggestive to everyone around, both male and female...

And people actually like this thing? No other day, not even Valentine's Day, has quite the same appeal to a natural wanderer to wander off. Unless he strays to close to an urban area anyway.
