Halifax to Leeds in December

Excuse if I sound thick but very rarely use trains.
We are looking at a day out in Leeds when we visit Halifax in early December.
Trainline says £17.20 for 2 Anytime Returns. Is this the best way to buy the tickets? Anytime return will be good as we have no idea how long we will spend in Leeds

If you are travelling on a weekday morning that ticket is going to be your best option, but as we do not know what day/time you are travelling it is difficult to say.

If you are travelling at times the Off Peak Return (CDR) is valid, then that would save you £1.30

As a general rule when purchasing train tickets, Trainline will charge a booking fee; it will be cheaper from a website that does not charge a fee.

A website such as Trainsplit will check to see if "splitting" is cheaper than a through fare (which won't be the case for this particular journey) and if it doesn't find anything cheaper, it'll still be cheaper than Trainline, as they don't charge a booking fee.

At off peak times, a Family Day Saver at £13.70 is better value and also includes bus travel. You can buy scratch off versions of these from the bus station ticket office in Halifax, or the orange rail ticket style version from the rail station ticket office.

There won't be any savings by booking in advance. You have a choice of travelling with a peak or off peak day return or the day saver.

Morning peak period ends at 9.30am and starts again at 4pm until 6.30pm.

For a journey like Halifax to Leeds you are probably just best purchasing at the station on the day of travel in case your plans change.

There is no discount for buying an Anytime or Off Peak ticket in ahead of travel.

worth pointing out that is bus and train across the whole of W Yorks. So could include you bus from where you are staying in Halifax to the station. While in Leeds you may like to go to places like Roundhay Park, for example. A good plan is to get a bus from the railway station to the bus station, then move up through the markets, then through the shopping round Briggate and the Headrow, and perhaps get to look at Park Square. Then you are the right end of Leeds for train home.

If you’re happy to limit yourself to a specific train, Northern sells advance tickets for £3.00 each way, so you could do your journey for £12.00 (£6.00 each).

Despite the name, these can be bought up to fifteen-ish minutes before departure (I can currently see some for 20:04 and 20:17 today from Halifax to Leeds), so you can play it by ear and should be able to buy one on the day when you know what time you’ll be done in Leeds.
