Halifax revamp moves a step closer

Any improvement is to be welcomed, and any improvement with foot and transport access would be wonderful. From my reading it's very vague on the third platform, but from my strictly amateur understanding of station design, I would have though allowing a three platform station would future proof. If service provision and passenger numbers rise, there'll surely be a point that a third platform would be useful, and as the infrastructure is mostly there already wouldn't it be a no-brainer?

You should know nothing is ever built to be future proofed. They build just enough for what is needed now, which results in either having to come back years later at a much higher cost, or leaving a bottle neck to constrain the network for decades to come.

Well actually it says this on the WYCA, Your Voice website under the F&Q section:

"How many railway carriages will the platforms be able to accommodate? Will this be able to cater for future growth?

The platforms will be able to accommodate 10 railway carriages in total. Not all the carriage doors will be in use on longer trains, as is common at many stations. The platforms are long enough for future train demand. The new station has been designed so Platform 3 can be brought back into use in the future if required."

The plans also available from the above website, also includes what is described as a 'Lobby' at ground/car park level and a second publicly accessible staircase opposite the proposed Ticket barriers to the footbridge which I presume are both future provision for the third platform. Although presumably the disused steps to the footbridge will have to be reinstated whilst this construction goes on so I don't know why they're not proposing on using them instead, unless of course this is in addition. It is rather confusing!
