IF A PERSON CALLED SIMON ASHTON ( SIMON25(at)HOTMAIL.CO.UK ) CONTACTS YOU THROUGH EMAIL DON'T OPEN THE MESSAGE. DELETE IT BECAUSE HE IS A HACKER!!
TELL EVERYONE ON YOUR LIST BECAUSE IF SOMEBODY ON YOUR LIST ADDS HIM THEN YOU WILL GET HIM ON YOUR LIST. HE WILL FIGURE OUT YOUR ID COMPUTER ADDRESS, SO COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE EVEN IF YOU DONT CARE FOR THEM AND FAST BECAUSE IF HE HACKS THEIR EMAIL HE HACKS YOUR MAIL TOO!!!!!....

Anyone-using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on. This information arrived this morning, Direct from both Microsoft and Norton. Please send it to everybody you know who has access to the Intern et. You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail titled 'Mail Server Report'
If you open either file, a message will appear on your screen saying: 'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful.'
Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC,
And the person wh o sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password.
This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus software's are not capable of destroying it ..
The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner'..
PLEASE SEND A COPY OF THIS E-MAIL TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS, And ask them to
PASS IT ON IMMEDIATELY!

HEY! Firstly, Nothing wrong with good old Duffs

Secondly, having just dragged this coumputer out of a rather horrid Virus infection myself, i certainly will be investing in any higher grade anti virus software i can get my hands on!

Flaming Thing If Anyone gets anything advertising Free Anti Virus software, really dont bother with it! Mine didnt come via someones gullibility, rather on the back of a download.

Either way, it certainly is rather worring when you do get a virus!

This is actually a very important thread. These hoaxes are really very common (messages like this do NOT generally get distributed by email), and can have terrible outcomes. Inexperienced people are scared, and do silly things. I have known one person who followed the instructions to wipe his own hard drive. More irritating than anything is when these get sent out to "everyone" and then "everyone" sends them on to "everyone" - not quite on the scale of a service denial attack, but similar.
When you get any message about computer threats, whether from an email or via the BBC or anything, first check it out on the Norton web site, then the McAfee and any other security sites. 999 out of 1000 times it is a hoax that can be ignored. But what fun and excitement these hoaxers must have. I can see the spotty little adolescent in his bedsit bursting his sides with laughter whenever he sends one.

This type of hoax is exactly like the emails people get from "Banks" asking them to click on a link then give away their web bank account details.

Of course the link they click on goes to a hackers website where the bank account details are stored and usually sold onto the highest bidder. The first the person knows is when they see a rather large withdrawl from their bank from somewhere usually outside the country they live in.

Even though this is a hoax, the safest thing to do is only accept people on MSN who you know and trust, although I have been getting quite a few requests lately from people I just dont add them if I dont know them.

It is pretty pointless having your msn address on your profile on this (and I assume other) sites then?

Depends how he defines "knows", if he knows them through a site like this then it makes sense to have it on his profile as people here can contact him. But if he wants to have met them before then yes, it's pointless.

Actually MS themselves do a free AV which has protected me thus far. It is called "Microsoft security essentials" and can be downloaded from the MS website. I know it may not be to everybody's taste but I have found no faults with it to date.

I never get why people would spend time on hacking

As an overt Hacker myself, I have to say that "hacking" can be a hell of a lot of fun if ye like to know how computers and related technologies work at the base level!

First though, let me clarify the correct meaning of a couple of commonly misused terms:

• Hacker / Hacking / Hack:
  Commonly misused and abused by the general populace to mean "Someone who breaks into things by computer; A cyber-criminal" (The correct definition for this being Cracker) a much more accurate and honest description of a Hacker is "Someone who enjoys playing around with complicated systems, learning and understanding how they work, and reengineering those systems to make them do things that they were never originally intended to." 8)
  Hackers come in many forms, and hacking is not in any way restricted to computing; Telephone hackers (Phreakers), psychological hackers (Social engineers) and similar crafts also exist.
  
  Hackers also come in sub-variants; The White Hat, the Black Hat, and varying levels of Grey Hat. White Hats often hack for the good of others (Normally the open source community or the general public), Black Hats normally hack for their own personal gain, and "Grey Hat" covers those who practice both sides of the art.
  .
• Cracker / Cracking / Crack:
  One who uses the arts of hacking for illegal purposes such as; System intrusion, circumvention of copy protection, piracy, monetary theft/fraud, identity theft, service denial and similar activities. Crackers are the ones often out to get your personal details, website logons and credit card numbers.

NB: I've already written a hell of a lot of stuff on the forum today, I'm too tired to sit in front of this PC any longer, and I'm going to nip off for Coffee in a minute. Before I do however, I'll just point out some of the things that my Hacking has allowed me to do over these last few years... 8)

• Re-engineered a SOHO router to allow fully definable IPtables routing,
• Turned an old NTL cable modem into a solid-state web server,
• Upgraded the 20Gb HDD in a friends PVR to a 320Gb model,
• Converted a DRM'd video library from an adult website into DVD format,
• Logged on and posted to RailUK using a Telnet client, and sent e-mail in a similar way,
• Reprogrammed a car EMS for more efficient fuel management and lower emissions,
• Found all of the secret bits in all four episodes of the original Doom!

No, I prefer having it on RUK as if someone wants to contact me from the site they can and theres no need for asking for it then and all they have to do is click on my E-mail adress and hey presto they can contact me.

On the other hand if I dont like them or dont know them and dont want there E-mails all I have to do is block them and there E-mails its no big hassel for me.
