HAA hoppers?

These used to be a regular sight through Cardiff before the 104T HTA bulk coal hoppers started being used. I saw a rake of HAA's pass Newport in Oct 2009 and was wondering if they still occasionally operate down in Wales or elsewhere? Or are any that are seen on the move going somewhere for storage/scrap?

Can't be sure they are still used, although they were the only ones that could on the Forth Bridge, the HTAs were banned if IIRC. Still a few of them stabled at Neville Hill, although they have been moved around and looked like they were going for scrap.

On the A1 at Scotch Corner last week there appeared to be at least 6 lorry loads of the remnants of hopper wagons heading South.

No workings atall use HAA hoppers now. The 1 last remaining flow through Carlisle converted to the 104 ton HTA hoppers a couple of months ago. Nearest we have now is the jobs to Ketton and Clitheroe Cement Works which are the MEA box wagons, which have a similar chassis to the HAA's

They put collars round the tops of HAA's to stop the wind blowing out the coal.
I will say that they have had thier moneys worth out of these vehicles, I have worked 100's of train of HAA's from many pits to many Power Stations and other companies.
I have seen bunkers at Grimethorpe, Wooley, South Kirkby, Kinsley,Houghton Main, Brodsworth, Dodworth Royston Drift and many more built and blown up with a couple of years, along with the pits.

Now the coal comes from the Clyde and Immingham from far off lands were slave labour is rife.

Don't believe what Google Maps shows - that link is several months out of date. The HAAs just to the south of the Leeds - Cross Gates line have been moved, and there are only around 20-30 left at the far south of the stabling lines. The National Power hoppers are still there.

Last time I heard the trains were still running as South Bank coking ovens are still running, although I have no idea what they are travelling in now.

As far a you can have character in a coal wagon, they had it in bucket loads.

It depends on a comparison, say between this year and last year. Last year there were a lot, now there are fewer. Plus it depends on whether you are used to seeing them or not!

Yes I too remember those places including the Anglers Site Nr Nostell pit. Only 2 remain now, Maltby & Kellingley but they tend to use the big Cat shovels to load these days at Maltby. I just cannot quite get the camera near enough the bunker here because the fence it too far away to shoot video of the yard.
Coal imports tend to be East Europe and Australian according to my sources but they are open cast on a vast scale hence the low cost (except shipping) but that too is under"flag-of-convenience" with stupidly low wages. Only benefits the multinationals/energy companies, not us!!:-x

Incidentally last saw HAA about 18 month ago to/from the Trent Valley stations. Harworth is now sure to close despite what British Coal / Coal UK say, the points at Firbeck Junction were lifted w/e 12 Sept 10 and that effective put the final nail in the coffin of Harworth Pit. RIP Harworth.

I saw an EWS 66 haul a long rake through Carlisle in August. En route to Neville Hill I found out later.

There are now none left at all it seems. Although there is a long rake of them in CF Booths access in Rotherham.

I don't think you'd want a station there.

It would be a good vantage point for photographing the depot but it would also be easier for vandals to get onto the depot from the estate.

I don't think many people would use it either.

There used to be a station in the Ballast Hills area, although I suppose it is close to Leeds/Cross Gates anyway. Might be useful as an overflow - imagine if we get another HST derailment. All would need to be done is move the running lines to go through that bit and extend the depot.
