GWR Sleeper

Evening Gents,

Looking for a bit of advice. I'm doing a Freedom of South West Rover next month with a mate and was wondering if this is valid.

Could we get on the 2145 Sleeper from Penzance on the seats, sleep to Taunton which gets in at 01:40, hop off and then back on the Southbound sleeper at 2:26 for some more kip to Penzance. The only restrictions on the ticket I can see is
Not valid on trains timed to depart after 04:29 and before 09:00.

Apart from questioning the intelligence behind this plan is it allowed?

Yes but if you left the sleeper en route you would have to wait until 0901 before you could resume travel or would have to buy another ticket.

The restrictions I can see say:

Available after 09:00 (Mondays-Fridays) or when Off-Peak Day Return is valid (whichever is earlier). Additionally valid on the 08:26 Westbury to Penzance service.

Available all day Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.

The question is how does this interact with the concept of the railway day that starts at 0000 and ends at 0429 some 28.5 hours later.

BR Fares shows the restriction as being B3. Now, that clearly isn't determinative, but it is a clear indication of the intent of the restriction - with B3 only applying from 04:30 onwards.

I would like to hope that GWR would confirm much the same if you asked their customer services.

Not for seated accommodation, no. This is different to the Caledonian Sleeper, which is reservation compulsory even for seated accommodation (except for the 'day-train' portion).

I’ve asked GWR for clarification on Wednesday but not heard anything back yet.

Restrictions note from 4am so logic says it would be valid at 2am and if we are already on the train at 4am that should be fine. Shouldn’t it?!

Restrictions generally speaking apply to when you board a train, but I would advise contacting GWR by Twitter, or else phoning them, to ask what their interpretation is.
