Hello all,

I've been going through the process of applying for a shunters role with GWR. So far I've carried out the RAAT and SCAAT assessments online and have been asked to go along for an interview.

Having never gone through the process before but having read through a number of posts I'd guess this is my DMI coming up, and that this will be an interview based on the STAR system? The interview will be safety first, customer service second...is this a pretty good rundown?

If anyone has any info which they reckon will help me get ready for the interview it'll be much appreciated.

Thanks all

Yes that all sounds about right. Obviously you can't know which order the questions will be asked in, but sounds like you have a good grasp on what will be asked. Likely to be some questions about your knowledge of GWR (rolling stock for instance / routes etc.) and then some questions regarding your knowledge of the role. Best of luck!

Hello all and sorry for the delay, the notifications haven't come through to my email.

Looking through the posts I can see that I've caused some confusion. It is a shunter role I'm going for, being totally honest I didn't know there was a difference between shunter and shunter driver, surely you can't have one without the other? But hey, if you guys can provide me with any info you have I'll be all over it.

tiptoptaff - I'll PM when I get to my laptop, can't seem to find a way of being able to from the phone...must be a way, unfortunately I'm missing it

Shunter pulls the points an talks to the driver through movements.

Depot driver/shunter driver drives the train within the depot limits.

I assume this was at the Longrock depot? How did it go? I've got my interview tomorrow (2nd time for this position, 3rd time overall in 2 years :s ), I dread every one and the last one for maintenance support member was definitely a tough one with more STAR based lengthy questions!

How did the interview go???
I thought mine went as well as it could to be honest, definitely better than the last two anyway! They snuck in a practical as well which just involved hooking up a tow on a mock up of a Class 43, preparing a carriage to be connected to an engine and decoupling an existing one and back on again.

The usual scenario based questions were asked (name a time when such and such happened and you had to do something etc...) and basically just a good all round chat and me asking loads of info about the job.

The result, well I didn't get this particular position BUT my email back said, 'Whilst you interviewed really well, unfortunately we do not have a vacancy that we are able to offer you. Your application has been placed on hold for 6 months pending further vacancies arising. Should this happen we will contact you.'

So I'm not sure if this a new thing they're doing for unsuccessful candidates or I might actually be in with a chance! I know for a fact that two shunters are on gardening leave so maybe they are anticipating fulfilling some more shoes?
