Hello all. I wondered if anyone knew approximately how many members of staff work for GWR? I don't seem to be able to find this information. Also, anyone who has been a trainee train driver, is it 9-5 Monday to Friday until fully trained and the shifts begin? Last question. While training are you entitled to privileged train travel or is this only when passed out? I'd be grateful for any answers to these queries.

It is 9-5 for only the first 12 weeks, then you will work shifts with your DI

You will get company travel from day 1, your PRIV card comes after a month of service.

I’d say more in that case. Can’t say for sure of course, as I don’t work for GWR, but SWR has around 6,000 (as of the end of last year, up from about 5000 when I joined in 2006) employees and is a company is of equal size I guess? There are probably an equal amount of management/office/customer service roles and the like which aren’t safety critical (SWR likes to invent weird and wonderful management/office based grades).

As I said, can’t say for sure as a companies resources aren’t necessarily dependent on over all size.

It's might be 9-3ish at the training depot but depends where you're based as to how you get to the training depot and what time you start , I know some that's been nearly 12hrs most days from door to door .

Does anyone know when annual leave can be taken from when you start?? Understand it’s full on the first few months in the classroom... I’m not too bothered but other half wants to know if we will get a holiday/time off this year!?

Assume nothing in the first 3-4months. Trainee leave is preplanned for the course and you'll find out whwn you get your course timetable when it is. Some depots are flexible during the handling phase. Some are not.
I wouldn't book anything until you have been given your rostered leave dates

Thanks! Can I confirm my understanding from other posts please? Sounds like there is 1 week rostered leave early in year, two in summer and 1 later in year and rest is 10 floating days for whenever it’s approved. Does that sound right?? Thanks again!

When you're qualified, roughly yes. But training is different, as it's worked to a plan with the other courses of trainees.

Is training carried out at the depot applied for?

Is the DMI the last stage of the application process?

GWR training school is at St Philips Marsh, Bristol, where all the classroom based training takes place. ( a guy replied to tell you that on your post on the other thread you put it on, but guess you havent seen it)

The DMI is the final stage of testing unless you consider the medical the final stage (which I do), which comes after that and alongside a training start date I believe.

Don’t suppose anyone knows the names of the interviewers that do DMI.? Preferably for Paddington Trainee Driver positions..

I did see the other reply but thought that might only be specific to Westbury vacancies. So Paddington trainees would be in Bristol. How long is the classroom based training?

Training could be done at Bristol SPM, Reading or Newton Abbot.

Now you can presume which location is more likely to be used for which course, but remember that rules are generic so nothing set in stone to say that it couldn't be at the 'less obvious' location for part of the training.
