Hi.

Can anyone let me know about terms at Paddington? I’m thinking of applying but I live in Essex so want to know shift lengths. Types of work. Any relevant Ts&Cs if possible.

Thank you

Can you get there within an hour then?
Thats a fair old trek.
Im not sure of the ins and outs of terms etc but I know a few who've worked there, seemed quite happy.

9H 30m max currently, work is very good, not as intense as you’d do at GA, branch line limits, 4 tractions at Paddington

Tbh I’m near shenfield so it’s a bit outside but I really am considering it since my parents live in north Ldn and I can move back with them.

Can you tell me more as that sounds good already. We have jobs here where you can have 12 headcodes with 6 min turn around and the job is 9hr 54. When you say not as intense I’m already excited

I know theres a thread with routes but I’m confused with all the different links at Paddington. Could someone confirm what routes you’d initially sign? What’s progression like between links?

It’s horrible to be honest and one minute delay emails keep coming through. That’s why we get best toc but treated like **** here at GA. That’s why I want out

During train running times you should be fine. 14 minutes shenfield to Stratford then 17 minutes on my line to Paddington.

That sounds horrendous and im with the Elizabeth Line. Lol.

I commute from Shenfield, it’s not that bad

Send me a DM

I know theres a thread with routes but I’m confused with all the different links at Paddington. Could someone confirm what routes you’d initially sign? What’s progression like between links?

So joining at Paddington you’ll be in Link 2, you’ll sign

Pad-Oxford
Pad-Bedwyn
West Ealing to Greenford
Slough to Windsor
North Pole Depot
Reading TCD
West Ealing LMD
Class 165/6
Class 230
Class 387
Class 800/802

Link 1 currently signs the exact same

The advance link signs Bristol Temple meads via box only and doesn’t sign Greenford or Windsor or the 230

The dynamic link (top link) signs Pad Cardiff via Box and Hullavington, and again no branch line work or the 230, they will soon be learning Bristol to Exeter and as such will lose Didcot to Oxford.

All new work goes into the top link and then gets passed down, when there are vacancy’s in the higher link, anyone can apply but it will be based on seniority, if no one applies then again the most senior driver will be moved up to fill the space

What on earth is the point of Padd GWR (who don't sign the B and H) learning Bristol to Exeter??!!! Especially considering Plymouth (who do sign B and H and regularly divert via Bristol) get told again and again we cannot relearn it despite putting a highly credible case forward!!!!

For the same reason there is a link at Reading of only a few drivers that sign Melksham. Train planning know best and we are not to question the powers that be.

Sums it up very well. Given up on asking the questions “why?”
I believe some of it has to do with having booked work in a link. (harmonisation agreement). Whereas HSS can do refresh and diverts. GWR drivers don’t have ‘diverts’ or ‘refresh’. The negotiation table for getting new booked work/retaining is like Hunger Games amongst other depots when they meet with route planning.

Most drivers at Padd don’t live in London. Most are in the Home Counties. If they do, bizarrely someone who commutes from Reading can get into work quicker than someone from South London.
We get parking at Padd. (Whilst limited, never had a problem)
If you decide to move west of London, you can have an additional parking pass at another GWR station. Slough for instance.
We don’t have a taxi agreement anymore.
For the trains you get a residential pass for GWR and can get 75% off national rail season tickets with RSTL travel. (Which you also get at your current TOC)
A few drivers live in your part of the woods, some a tad bit further and mange to get in with no problem.

If you do come over, in the lower links it’s MUCH easier to get a swap with someone for perm early shifts in exchange for late/nights. Failing that, many are happy to swap start times. Moving through the ranks from link 2 to link 1 is pretty quick as drivers don’t want to lose their swaps/change rest day patterns. As mentioned our highest link is called dynamic. Won’t be any progressions into it for the foreseeable future.

Work pattern is 4 day week. Whilst Padd drivers (those pre harmonisation) can ‘chuck’ Sundays in, those on newer GWR driver contracts (which you’ll be on) have to work Sundays. You can still chance it by chucking a Sunday in and getting it off, but personally wouldn’t bank on it. This is something that is in discussions to implement a 7 day week for everyone.

Don’t get London weighting (only HSS Padd) or any depot location subs/allowances.

Not possible to transfer to HSS (purely long distance work) as that is ring fenced after harmonisation.
However 800 is core traction and someone has posted the routes you’ll do in link 2.

You’re allowed 1 PTR move. If in the future you want to move to the south west and retire along the coast you can put a transfer in.

Start/finish times can change every link/diagram update. But vaguely said and prepare for 02:45 could be your earliest and latest 01:45. Nights being 19:30 or 22:00 till 05:00 or 06:30. I say these times with a pinch of salt so you can work out whether or not you can get in for those times. Many drive in when they’re in that range. Use night buses or the night time Reading-Padd stopper.

It’s a great depot, with great work which will only increase over time as HSS gets smaller.

Hello, hope I'm okay to jump in with some questions!

Out of interest, how many A/L days would one get there? I.e. how many are pre-rostered, and how many are floating?

Also, and i think I know the answer to this: does there happen to be an Oyster card included for any depots?

Thanks so much!

0350 is currently our latest finish, and hopefully by next year the night turn which is currently amended to start even earlier will be gone

32, 16 floating with first 6 guaranteed plus any vacant holiday blocks so more of then than not a lot more the 6 will get it.

There is no Oyster card included, that would be a TfL thing, I think GTR get them as well

I class those 03:50 finishes as nights. Lol

There is a link at Oxford that now sign Swindon of which to some degree I think makes sense for the Oxford Bristol services.
I can see some merit in that one. It's more the "HSS can lose anything and everything no matter the consequences" that irks me. I genuinely feel sorry for the travelling public when a train is further delayed yet again awaiting a route conductor between Taunton and Bristol on a seemingly weekly divert away from the B and H, all in the name of HSS drivers bad, GWR new drivers good.

I fully agree with you that it’s not the best situation, but they way they look at it is that it’s NR problem if they want trains to divert

And this is the type of nonsense GBR is supposed to remedy, and yet GWR is at the back of the queue for nationalising unfortunately.
