Hello Guys,

New to the forum and in the industry. I recently got a job Gateline Assistant for Southern (Clapham). All confirmed. but i just got an invitation for assesment centre, same position for GWR (Paddington).
In case i'd be successful for GWR, which company should i go for?
thank you all

Not an easy one to answer; what do you consider to be "best"? Pay? T&Cs? Roster? Commute time? Work environment?

I used to work for Southern. I'd say that if you have easy access to both, then GWR have more opportunities for progression. Southern as a company are fine, but I found progression to be a challenge. I now for work for a different TOC (not GWR) and feel a lot better because of it.

Depends on what you're looking for though. Good luck with whichever you choose!

Fair enough. It's probably quite minimal for a gateline role as opportunities like dispatch or guard/train manager will come up at both GWR & SWR. Probably GWR by a whisker.

What about your commuting time? That will play a larger impact. As will your roster. Clapham Junction is a mixed terminus/through station and Paddington is a full terminus so that might impact your role on the gateline.

Some of the SWR gatelines are a bit dingy at Clapham whereas Paddington is a more pleasant place to be overall although I gather it can be cold in the winter and hot in the summer.

I was thinking that regarding stations, i know Paddington a bit more, and yes i guess is more pleasant place.
