Well, I only got properly stuck into the hobby back in May 2014, so I'm not really surprised at my folly.
I think I was referring to the end of the rake of coaches, rather than each individual coach - but knowing half the stuff I spout on this forum, who can say?

:D Just to clarify, crew don't use the power cars to access the passenger coaches, other than in rare situations. There's no need to be in there, plenty of areas within the coaches!

Looks like they have retained the Slam Door at the Guards end on the TGS perhaps unsurprisingly, I assume the XC sets will be the same, while Scotrail appear to be ditching the TGS. Seems to be a bit of an inconsistency there really although I guess its a cost saving if nothing else, guards seem to increasingly observe the train departing from the window of a closed power door rather than looking out of the Window.

ScotRail are not taking TGSs as you say - guard’s accommodation will be in the buffet. The door next to the buffet on the ScotRail sets will not be converted to sliding door but will remain as a slam door, but for emergency use only; similar to the Chiltern power door sets.

Correct me if i'm wrong... but I was under the impression that no more sets would move to Doncaster until the first set has been rigorously tested and accepted for passenger use

brel york can probably confirm, but I believe the plan was to get one four-car set out for GWR to test, then concentrate on the Scotrail and XC door conversions for the time being before any more GWR sets are worked on.

There are paths in for some proposed test runs on Saturday 17th March, continuing on the following day.

5Z10 1557 Laira to Penzance arrive 1859.

5Z11 0828 Penzance to Exeter St David’s arrive 1227.

5Z21 1331 Exeter St David’s to Plymouth arrive 1442.

5Z51 1507 Plymouth to Exeter St David’s arrive 1612.

5Z52 1648 Exeter St David’s to Laira arrive 1857.

Timings reflect station stops built in to the schedules.
Perfect day to do Devon day rover on Sunday.

If the TGS is to be retained as a cycle storage area, it makes sense to retain the slam door since it isn't a public area anyway, passengers don't travel in that part of the train so there is limited benefit in the considerable cost of converting it. The lack of the usual vestibule and internal layout at that location would presumably add further development costs.

Recent suggestions at one point were that the GWR sets would run initially in slam door format due to the extra development time being taken.

The focus now is to deliver asr first rake in April along side xct first rake , feels a tad over optimistic as far as the department I work in are concerned

Sorry to change the subject but I think it's been decided that the 158s are supposed to work along side the 2+4 HSTs between Penzance and Cardiff once the Cardiff to Portsmouth route goes 'Turbo'.

I posted another thread the other day about GWRs 158s and a few people said that this is what will be happening.

It's been reported several times in the railway press as well.

[158s in Devon and Cornwall] This was stated explicitly in the 2015 direct award franchise brief. I’m quite surprised it is still a matter for regular discussion...

I think people are tending not to trust the earlier information, as it has not been made particularly clear what effect the electrification delays will have on the cascade of Turbos to the Bristol area and therefore the 158s moving west. Did the direct award brief take this into account?

I don’t think anyone has ever come up with an accurate measurement of the delay. But even if it is a nice round figure such as a year, has there been any real evidence that the final intended allocations of stock have changed at all?

The short set ran to Truro and back this afternoon. Intention is there to run the same timings every day this week for driver training

Question - is there any reason why 158s couldn’t stay on the Portsmouth runs as 5 cars with SDO, with the turbos going to Devon and Cornwall after a refurbishment.

I’m aware it’s unlikely to happen, just interested in the logic behind it.

5-car 158s probably wouldn't even need SDO as they fit at all platforms the trains commonly stop at. Local door could be used for the late night/early morning stops at Patchway/Freshford. I'm not sure GWR would have enough 158 units to run 5 car over the whole route though.

The Turbos would be acceptable if they had 2+2 seating with tables. I somehow just don't think they will.

Turbos arent cleared past Exeter so the only option is 158s for the Southwest and Turbos for Cardiff - Portsmouth

Not enough of them. That’s the real reason. The only available type that could provide enough cars for the route were Turbos.

FG tried to get some more cl.158 in but none were available.

Thanks, shame really as they’re better units currently and IMO more suitable than turbos. Anyway, back to the actual discussion.

It's still the Grammer IC3000s, excellent news. It has been done to GWR spec, much like set LA15.

I have a photo.
Can this photo be made public?

I'm assuming the seats have the new GWR moquette as used on the 387s and DMU returns, rather than the light grey cloth used on LA15 and 166205 which gets stained quickly.

FWIW I went on a regular GWR HST yesterday which was refurbished and the seats were in moquette, not cloth. The interior was very high quality indeed, the best I've seen (very nice touch of leather headrest), and the LED lighting (both strips) was spot on as to brightness and colour temperature, about the same as the ex-LM Desiros.

Which set was this? Wasn't aware that they were being refurbished, given their imminent withdrawal.
