Looks like it's not running that day due to engineering works:

Great Western Railway:

Monday to Thursday:

  • The 18:36 London Paddington to Plymouth service will terminate at Exeter St David's. If you are travelling beyond Exeter St David's you should travel by earlier or later rail services.
  • The 19:04 London Paddington to Plymouth service will arrive / depart Newton Abbot, Totnes and arrive Plymouth a few minutes earlier than normal.
  • The 20:03 London Paddington to Plymouth service will terminate at Totnes. A rail replacement bus service will run between Taunton and Plymouth (operated by CrossCountry).
  • The 21:00 Penzance to Exeter St David's service will terminate at Plymouth (and restart at Totnes). A rail replacement bus service will run between Plymouth and Exeter St David's, calling at Ivybridge, Totnes and Newton Abbot.
  • The 21:04 London Paddington to Plymouth service will terminate at Exeter St David's. A rail replacement bus service will run between Exeter St David's and Plymouth, calling at Newton Abbot, Totnes and Ivybridge.
  • The 21:45 Penzance to London Paddington "Night Riviera" Sleeper service will not run.
  • The 22:24 Plymouth to Exeter St David's service will depart Plymouth at 22:27. Normal timings departing Totnes and beyond.
  • The 23:45 London Paddington to Penzance "Night Riviera" Sleeper service will not run.

That's actually quite interesting. It has a variety of different paths it can run on, being direct between Reading and Taunton. Via Bristol Parkway and Filton bank, via Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads, Berks and Hants etc.

I think it's quite rare for it to be completely cancelled due to engineering works. Happy to be corrected of, course!

Yes indeed, even via Yeovil in an option when there’s works in the Taunton area. Another I’ve also done is via Westbury and Melksham, so that gives 5 options north of Exeter.

One would assume in this case it is because the engineering works are between Totnes and Plymouth, where there are no alternative routes available.
