The rail operator Great Western Railway (GWR) is to be renationalised in a "significant" move for trains in the West of England, the government has confirmed.
GWR, based in Swindon, runs services linking London to the south-west of England and South Wales. It will come back under public ownership on 13 December.

However, the more interesting part of the article that begs for speculation is:

Helen Godwin, mayor for the West of England Combined Authority, welcomed the news.

"We deserve four trains an hour at stations across our growing regional rail network," she said, adding: "We'll continue working with partners to deliver the infrastructure needed to make that ambition a reality."

Anyone any idea what Helen Godwin is going on about here and/or what is being done by WECA to deliver the infrastructure for 4tph across the region?

There have to be questions about the choice of the BBC to run this today given that the change is not "in months", it is more than 6 months from now.

There have to be questions about the choice of the BBC to run this today given that the change is not "in months", it is more than 6 months from now.

I think it was run because (correct me if I'm wrong) this was detailing the specific date for the first time.

I probably would have said "this year" rather than "in months", but seven months is not really that far away.

As far Helen Godwin, I would be kind and say that the statement is a little vague!

You can improve the infrastructure so it supports 4tph, but you will also need to find some more trains from somewhere to run those extra trains.

The date is not speculation. It is more the content of the article referring to improvements and 4tph in WECA that beg speculation.

I am sure there will be a thread on the actual announcement in the main forum.

At present, Great Western has some pretty decent fares west of Exeter, particularly for getting around Cornwall.

My main concern is that these aren't ruined by LNER style shenanigans.

The renationalisation date would be a good time to announce that a new fleet order has been approved; there are discussions about it ongoing right now and combining the two would be good political spin to say nationalising GWR made this order possible. Of course I won't hold my breath that this happens.

Although frequency was increased, a considerable number of regional and semi-fast trains are operated by short 2car or 3car DMUs.

Not unheard of (in Bristol area) for people not to be able to board due to crush loaded. Nothing has been done to provide extra DMU stock in Bristol area for years despite many stations now busier than pre covid
