hi all,

I have been trying without success to start a new career with GWR, my preferred choice would be an onboard role like Conductor or TM, although getting close I just can’t seem to get over the line!

I have however recently been interviewed for a position at a station and although I think I would enjoy the job (I wouldn’t have applied otherwise) the first mention of pay scales was at the interview, it was lower than I expected and considerably lower than my current job.

So my question is, if I do manage to secure a job offer would my chances of progression through the company be greatly improved by being an internal candidate in any future applications? Are there roles within GWR that are only ever advertised internally?

Any advice appreciated.

Roles in GWR are advertised internally first, and then externally. (unless they don't feel there would be enough eligible internal candidates to fill the vacancies, such as the recent big driver recruitment drive)

Being an internal candidate will give you access the the interview prep workshops, training courses, shadowing days and other experiences you couldn't get outside the company. Any job in the rail industry will stand you in better stead moving forward in the industry, as you'll encounter the situations they want you to have experience in for Guard and Driver roles.

There's a lot of variety in the company and the opportunity to move on and progress is there for those who are good at their jobs and show a good attitude.

Thankyou, this is just the kind of reply I was hoping for.

Worth bearing in mind also, that base salaries for staff on stations is usually quite low, but there are a lot of opportunities to boost this with enhancements (for Sundays/bank holidays and unsociable hours etc) and overtime.
