There are also some official looking guys fiddling around with what looks like fireworks or pyros in the waste ground near P15. Head torches on etc.

I'm on my way to Paddington now. I really hope it's a class 800 because I'm using a box up for this and am currently standing all the way to Paddington on an Adelante.(train is busy :()

Things going a bit better at Paddington - 800008 and 800009 with pantographs up for 0700 to Bristol - media in attendance.

Well it seems to go ok!!

The seats are fairly firm and upright in first, they're not terrible but they also aren't the leather ones from a HST!!

Correction 0620 from Bristol is 2x800s. 005 and 006.

What's the 0620? I just see the 0600 (1A03) leaving Bristol at 0625 [1]. Looks as if that should be 800s, since there was an incoming service from Stoke Gifford which arrived at the same platform (15) 59 minutes late [2]. Having said that, the back-up HST from St. Philip's Marsh into the same platform appears to have run too [3]. Platform 15 must be very very long ;) (only joking, … the HST presumably formed 1Y03 to Weston-super-Mare, which ended up leaving first … “super mare” being an appropriate description for the PR resulting from the first IET running late! :)

Does anyone know whether the front or rear unit is busier?

Well of course all the media attention will be at the London end - I can't have imagined all the London based media types would travel down to Bristol on the Sunday evening for 1A03. They'll probably all bail at Reading so they won't get altitude sickness if they travel further west. ;) :D

Acceleration seems pretty good as it pulled out of Chippenham
Initial acceleration good, but only 97 max Dauntsey falling to 94 at top of the bank. Max 105 after Wootton Bassett.

HST would have overtaken well before Dauntsey and held 110 up the bank then 120 max after W B.

Both trains passed Pangbourne within a couple of minutes of each other due to the delay of the ex-Bristol service. Both were in diesel mode, the ex-Bristol train was also being pursued by a helicopter with a camera.

It's stopped. Hmm. Worried-looking Hitachi chap walking about. “Can the technical fitters come to the front cab” says the driver (I assume). A “minor technical fault” seems to have occurred.

On the 0600 ex-BRI, stopped at Taplow and the driver has made a PA announcement for a fitter to attend the front cab (you could hear an alarm going off in the background!).

Impressions of the train are more positive than I was expecting. The interior is a little bland (nothing like the lovely GWR HST MkIIIs) but the build quality feels impressive. It’s reassuringly solid. No real problems with diesel vibration - in fact it feels more like a pure EMU. The toilets are very pleasant and have automatic all in one tap/soap/dryer arrangement.

Negatives are that the lights are too bright and too white, and there are some seats in the end coach in First Class which have no window whatsoever. Madness - put a luggage rack there instead. You can also hear staff chatter in the kitchen which seems to have a less solid door than there is on a 390.

Showing 5A03 out of pad now. Will the diagram get an iep replacement, or have they run out of available units now and it'll be hst?

This is thoroughly depressing... but am I surprised?... err.. no! What are the chances that, come 1500hrs today, there will be no IETs running at all?!
