I used to travel on this regularly in 2016 and 2017. It used to arrive in Paddington just before 9pm, therefore quicker than the scheduled IET from Jan 2019.

Granted Network Rail have experienced issues, but why should that prevent GWR adjusting their timetable to reflect the performance of the IETs? Electrification is a separate issue, the IETs are said to out-perform the HSTs on diesel anyway.

GWR's own publicity material on board the IETs states:

Faster journeys
Our Intercity Express Trains accelerate faster than our current fleet, which means shorter travel times. And, with better braking, you’ll notice a smoother and quieter ride too.

Nowhere does it state that these benefits won't be available until the end of 2019. If what you say is true, GWR should remove this misleading propaganda.

GWR adjust their timetable? You don't seem to understand how timetable planning works.

GWR don't just go to Network Rail and say, 'we're going to do x, y and z, so there'.

As Clarence Yard says, it all has to be agreed, for the fairly obvious reason that there are all sorts of other passenger and freight services out there and they all have to work together. Network Rail is meant to co-ordinate the whole process. Unfortunately, its centralisation of timetable planning work at Milton Keynes a few years ago cost it a lot of experienced staff based elsewhere in the country who did not want to move, which has led to serious problems.

In the GWR area, the belated admission that Crossrail will not meet its opening target dates for the tunnel under central London has done nothing to assist the process, as this has knock-on effects in terms of what Thames Valley services GWR has to continue to operate in the meantime and how its traincrew can be used as a result.

So the 18.50 off Worcester was timetabled to reach Paddington at 20.57 for a while. What exactly does this prove? I expect most passengers from Worcester would still prefer a 21.05 London arrival to sitting at Moreton-in-Marsh for 15 minutes and then sitting at Oxford for 10 more, before reaching Paddington around 21.30.

Some extra running time was applied to a number of evening fast services from Oxford into Paddington a year ago - it is not an adjustment this coming week, as you seem to think. I don't know whether this was at Network Rail or Crossrail's request for engineering purposes or to allow some extra time at stations to deal with slam doors in case of HSTs being used on these services instead of trains fitted with power doors and having the acceleration of a 180 or IET during the transition to full IET operation this year.

But it was not intended to be a long-term measure for the reason already stated above - that GWR was expecting to have its new IET timetable in place next week. When Network Rail finally gets its act together on timetabling, then there will be quicker journey times.

Thanks both for your replies. I wasn't aware of the complexities (or NR losing experienced staff - something many businesses don't seem to consider until it's too late). I appreciate now that there are several more moving pieces than I initially realised. If the benefits of IETs only translate to a timetable benefit in late 2019/early 2020 then perhaps GWR should hold back on the 'shorter travel times' propaganda until nearer the time.

They have been promising faster journey times since at least the start of the current direct award franchise in 2015, so I don't think there's much chance of that happening.

In the meantime, some passengers will indeed get faster journey times between specific stations - e.g. Swindon-Bristol Parkway, now that the IETs can use electric power, but trains will then be sat longer at stations waiting for their booked departure time, which has been happening at Reading in particular for some months now.

I’m traveling on Tues 8th Jan, on 1C76 10.03 Paddington-Penzance and 1A97 16.00 Penzance-Paddington, was just wandering if it is booked 2x5 car 802 all the way through or 5 car Plymouth-Penzance-Plymouth?

I’m booked in the Pullman on way back, how does it operate when its portion working, ie 5 car from Penzance, coming from Penzance will I be in correct portion for the Pullman or will I have to change unit at Plymouth?.

Booked 2x5 802 throughout (same diagrams so will be the same sets for 1A97)

Saturday 12th January I will be on 1A79 Penzance to London Paddington. Is there any way of knowing whether this will be a HST or IET service?

Checking here against the list of remaining HST diagrams. If it isn't listed it is an IET formed service.

https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/remaining-gwr-hst-diagrams.164465/page-16

However, which service do you consider to be 1A79 on a Saturday? It is helpful if you post the time as well, particularly since there doesn't appear to be a 1A79 on Saturday 12 January. If you mean 1A78 06.50 Penzance - Paddington (which corresponds broadly to what is 1A79 on a weekday) then that is booked for a HST according to the list.

Named Humphey Davy at the other end. I must say I'm not a fan of naming each set twice. If you have a pair they will carry 4 different names!!! Call me a luddite but please! I'd sooner not have them named at all than this ridiculous policy and cities etc would make far better train names than unheard of people ( obviously not referring to the above but other names chosen who are not well known)

Nobody will be able to reliably tell you what it will be working tomorrow yet as allocations are made during the night before. Sorry about that but it is the kind of question that crops up quite frequently.

I suppose that, as time goes on, they could become separated and attached to different 'partner sets' which would justify this idea. I can't see why they can't just be named after big country houses, but then, I would! :)

Thanks for posting updated diagrams

These two split at Paddington don't they - country end unit 5L90 2052 London Paddington to North Pole Iep Depot, London end unit 1D41 2118 London Paddington to Oxford

What is 802101's current role? Does it work 800/3 diagrams or just randomly in place of whatever 10-80x can't be resourced otherwise?

Well spotted, I was just whizzing down the headcodes by that stage and missed the ‘detach’. I’ll go back and edit.

802101 tends to be substituted for whatever is required.

I had 802101 on the Kemble line a few weeks ago. It seems to just be filling in for 800/3s where necessary for now.

it is interesting to see how they are being swapped round week to week on virtually all the routes -mainly Swansea and Penzance - but no Cotswold turns at the moment. Seems like the 800/3's enjoy the majority of PAD to BTM.
That must mean a lot of 800s filling in on the Penzance run?

There aren't that many services to Penzance to fill:

1C71 0635 2x802
1C04 0730 2x802
1C76 1003 2x802
1C80 1203 2x802
1C84 1403 HST
1C86 1503 HST
1C88 1603 HST
1C90 1703 HST
1C92 1803 2x802 split Plymouth
1C94 1903 HST (FO)

On Monday the 1803 didn't have enough fuel to make it to Penzance so was swapped to an HST at Paddington. Restaurant service cancelled and arrived at Penzance 54L. At least it had a buffet though!

Just one of the problems of 802s and 800s not being interchangeable if it means spending a night at the 'wrong' depot. Wouldn't have the luxury of a HST substitute in a few months time and would no doubt have to be cancelled.......

I'll be honest, that's a bit ridiculous for a train (new one especially) to not have enough fuel to complete a journey. Surely the people who fuel trains make sure there's enough to last til arriving back at the depot after end of service?

Hopefully the, I guess, 802 had a fault and that the driver didn't leave it running for more than necessary.

It may have been swapped earlier and finished up on a job to Penzance and nothing else to replace it with. The best laid plans don't always work out. Obviously it hadn't been able to follow it's diagram since last fuelled. Perhaps cancel the train ?

Just seen something unusual

2x800 (800003, didn't see the other number) operating to Plymouth. One would think that they don't operate that route, hence why they have 802s as well.
