Managed to find a really good advance deal from Oxford to Hereford for just £9.20.

Standard class advance single is £7.55.

Would you say the little extra money is worth it for first class experience on a GWR IET Class 800/802?

It's a better seat definitely, and you get a hot drink and a snack I believe

Yes, that’s a fairly long trip and a very good fare!

worth the extra just for the advantage of a nice single seat, not having to sit next to anyone. and maybe a free coffee as well

Mate it’s a difference of less than £2… that’s worth it for almost any first class!

I've even seen first class tickets cheaper than standard class, albeit not for this particular trip
I think that occurs when advance tickets for standard sells out, which then raises the price. At least this is the reply I got when I noticed a similar occurrence with EMR.

See this thread for reasons why it happens:

An absolute steal, if I found First Class that cheap then I'd book it without hesitation. Even if the complimentary refreshments are not available, the bigger seat and more space are worth it :)

Indeed, plus free food and drinks I believe! (As @cactustwirly has pointed out)

Visiting last year, I found the attendants on GWR were OK, but not quite as proactive as Avanti WC ones.

Weakest 'free food and beverages' was on TransPennine Express.

On a strike day when Grand Central operated (thank God), attendants were friendly with food offering 'medium'.

In 1st, not only are the seats wider and otherwise more spacious but you tend to have a better class of person travelling. (Me an exception o_O).

Outrageously snobbish but it made me laugh ;) I love it

Avanti West Coast definitely offer a better service, but one might say that the offering has been considerably downgraded since taking over from Virgin Trains primarily to facilitate the introduction of Standard Premium. Four first class carriages on 11 cars became two, or three became one on 9 cars, and one of those cars is the tiny kitchen car - which while typically my favourite due to added privacy and better tilt going south - is regularly used abominably by lazy crew on southbound runs as a place to chat and eat the rest of the food - they’ll rarely leave their seat again after Crewe or Coventry despite ninety minutes of expensive journey remaining. They’ve reduced complimentary hot food options considerably too, used to have three choices at dinner.

LNER are largely the same, either slightly worse on services offering the Deli menu, and slightly better on services offering Dine. The messroom issue isn’t as bad but still exists on Azumas. Their London crew are shockingly condescending and can treat you like a schoolchild if they don’t take to you…

TransPennine, TfW and Grand Central will give you snacks only. GWR will give you snacks too but far more choice, and they tend to serve you multiple rounds. Often TPE’s won’t be available though, especially on 185s.

CrossCountry will give you snacks only on 170s with catering, but a wider range similar to GWR’s is available on Voyagers - plus sandwiches, hot bacon rolls and muffins which GWR don’t do. They used to do hot meals on some North East South West services but I believe these are no longer available, and often weren’t during their run anyway. Hull Trains have a similar menu.

What do you get catering wise on GWR? Do you get crisps, sandwiches and soft drinks?

Sandwiches were withdrawn.
Porridge, flapjacks, cookies, pastries, biscuits, crisps and popcorn are usually available all day and they’ll usually give you a lot.

I'm sure the sandwiches are back (weekdays) but I'm doubting myself now, sure I saw some on a set the other day (in 1st).

GWR you get hot drinks, water, fruit juice, coke and diet coke, quite a range of snacks on weekdays, hot drinks, water and snack boxes at the weekend.

Oh, okay it was a while ago now I last travelled first with them, a few times in November so they might have changed it since New Year, but when they were just doing snacks it was a far larger variety of snacks than TPE or Grand Central would offer, or XC before they expanded their range.

You may get lucky sometimes if there's stock left over on the trolley etc. But obviously weekend travel you generally get less as its mostly weekend 1st upgrades or cheaper advances.

Though the way the market is changing there is probably more demand for encouraging 1st class leisure travel as a means of higher revenue yield.

I am travelling to Totnes from Paddington this Sunday. What is the weekend first upgrade price for this journey? I can’t seem to find it online.

Weekend first is subject to availability mind, quite often weekend services get pretty full pretty quick in 1st class
