The railway is moving further and further up its own fundamental orifice. Might as well shut it down completely: abysmal staff attitudes, poor customer service and requires a fortune in subsidy to keep it running. What’s to like?

I think you could be on the wrong forum...

You don’t like it get in your car and drive.
I'd have called the BTP and had the OP thrown off, myself.

And its attitudes like that people will drive and never return to the railways. The railway needs to become more customer focussed now looking after those that do travel particularly now that the commuters aren't travelling and many won't return. If the guard was that bothered she should have stayed in the back cab.

Agree with this sentiment.

Poor customer service or Poor customer attitude? All things are relative

In the context, poor customer attitude. It's well known that there are restrictions at the moment and why. Not agreeing that there should be is not an excuse for not following them, and definitely not for mouthing off at staff who have been told to enforce them.

They probably were orders, just not necessarily company-wide. I have travelled GWR extensively over the past week with my wife and staff west of about Hayle were very considerably more difficult/strict/insert your own word in terms of “CovidSecure” stuff than the rest of the network. My money’s on a particularly punctilious area manager in Penzance.

For FirstGroup companies the advice is to announce to passengers to only sit in window seats (where possible and capacity allowed for it) so YES they where indeed following policy

The more militant staff demanding exemption certificates less so

Maybe there should be some consistency so that there is a clear set of rules for 'when using a train', rather than leaving companies to make up their own, then regions of companies and individual staff to make up extra ones?

And those rules should conform to the law - so no getting arsey and demanding 'exemption certificates' from anyone not wearing a mask.

Many people are getting weary of the 'do this / don't do this to keep everyone safe' line as it's trotted out all the time as a justification for any and every measure which somebody wants to introduce.

On Northern services, usually where there isnt internal doors, the access to the rear most sent of doors has been taped off with guards stopping people using them but I have been on a few where a couple of other staff are riding, often sat next to each other and they have taped off down the centre of the rear carriage blocking off fully half of the seats for a pair of staff to use, even on two car services.

I would dearly love consistency.

To that I would add requiring masks to be worn at outdoor platforms, which is not illegal in England.

That’s as the GOP panels where the guard releases doors and dispatches from aren’t on opposite doors on most trains.

From the cab the one for the right hand side is the first door, but the left hand side is the second door down

I totally agree about consistency. But that's not the fault, or responsibility, of the unfortunate young lady working on this aforementioned train. She was probably trying to implement the requiremts of her employers risk assessment...and.. maybe just keep her and everyone she comes into close proximity with, safe. She should be applauded, not ridiculed.

If she was my daughter, I'd be proud. If the OP was someone I knew, I'd be ashamed

As we seem to have drifted somewhat off the topic of this thread (the restriction in the use of one of the first class vehicles on a GWR IET as confirmed by the photo in post #10) it is time to draw it to a close. If any poster would like to report on their rail travel experiences during this pandemic then they are welcome to post a report in the trip planning and reports section. In addition for comments on COVID rules in particular, there are more appropriate threads that can be used in the COVID 19 section of the forum.

Thank you.
