When my friend try to purchase GWR e tickets, it popped that an app must be downloaded to use their e tickets. I thought this is a thing for the long gone m tickets.

Is it GWR no longer email pdf e tickets?

Don’t use the GWR app if you can avoid it, it has problems which sometimes mark valid tickets as invalid, for tickets with validity longer than one day.
Use this site’s ticketing system if you can!

I suggest asking GWR as it's their site, but I can assure you that our site won't require any form of app; we've never supported the flawed m-ticket format and only issue e-tickets or TOD (paper tickets for collection).

You've not stated what flow this is for, but providing e-tickets are enabled, if you use our site, we will provide e-tickets.

I think I have read on here before that this information is actually out of date and that GWR do actually send a pdf ticket as well.

At one point GWR was issuing e-tickets (not requiring activation) but only viewable in their app. I too believe they have now resolved this and a PDF is also e-mailed now.

Yeah, if the purchaser were I, I would have used the forum site.
It's rather difficult to putsade friends to use third party sites

The confirmation email from GWR will have PDF tickets attached to it. Their generic message about requiring an app is years out of date, despite it being bought to their attention many times.
