We travelled on the 13.03 Paddington to Plymouth today. Excellent lunch but arrived more than half hour late and we missed our connection to Truro. But the delay seemed avoidable. Initially behind the late running 12.33 Paddington to Taunton, then two more stopping trains. But had we overtaken the 12.33 at Westbury (I think we were only just behind and we weren’t stopping) the delay would have been minimal and we wouldn’t have got held up by the other two stopping trains.
This sort of thing seems to happen all the time. I know there is often a bigger picture but on this case the 12.33 would have had few passengers after Westbury, whereas a lot were delayed by more than 30 minutes to Plymouth so will claim delay repay. GWR staff on train agreed it wasn’t a sensible decision.
I assume that these decisions are taken by the signaller not GWR, but are they made in the best interests of the majority of passengers?
