I applied for the same Conductor job at Exeter and received an almost instant invite to an assessment centre. I have literally just finished that assessment centre this afternoon so in all honesty I would suggest you have been unsuccessful. A phone call to their HR wouldn’t hurt though, they’ve been incredibly helpful in the dealings I’ve had with them.

Im sure every person in the room would have had a different view on what it’s like. My opinion though is that it is very intense, a lot more complex than the practice sheets your given (although they give you the basic idea) and certainly a lot more pressured in regards to time allowed to answer the questions.
My honest opinion is that it is incredibly hard to get all the way through the RAAT and impossible to complete all the ticketing questions! I guess that’s all part of the testing process though, put you under pressure and see if you crack.
There were 9 in my group and the lady who took the tests said 10 this morning, I would assume numbers would be similar tomorrow. No mention made of how many staff they are looking for although i had to speak to HR a few days ago who said GWR are due to take delivery of a new type of train which would require x2 conductors because you can’t walk through it end to end, which would mean they would need a lot more staff.

IETs are and will be worked by one Train Manager and a Ticket Examiner in the front set. Conductors do not work High Speed services.
I know that this vacancy is for conductors working Paignton - Barnstaple - Exmouth / Exeter St Davids routes. I do wonder though if with the introduction of the IET's there will be more local conductors going for the High Speed Services. In my mind they would require more Train Managers as the will be more splitting of sets. I would read the 800 threads, but seeing as the average page count of the 800 threads is about eleventy billion, I can't be bothered.....

Yes she was pleasant. It’s impossible to gauge what the passmark is, I genuinely believed I hadn’t done that well. Anyway the email I got said they will shortlist again from those that have passed so getting through this stage doesn’t guarantee to get you to the next assessment/interview. Although I think I heard her correctly in that if you pass the results are valid for 3 years which is a relief!
But either way, that’s handy. She said results will be kept on file for 3 years. I thought she said if you passed the tests (today) you would go through to the selection day (possibly 18th February..) She also did say that some people will be offered a job but not a start date (talent pool).
I personally feel I did ok (ish) I hope...... it was so much harder than the practice papers, however I think I let my self down on the ticket selling test, with that in mind I fully expect a thanks but no thanks email.

Sorry I’m (easily) confused? Did you ever apply for a TM job, or are you saying that they are telling you you are suitable for a TM job off the back of your conductor assessment?
Or have I read that completely wrong?!
So this week is the 2nd assessment centre, assuming the group assessment goes well it’s interview time.
My current prep is on the assumption that the interview will be competency based, I.e “can you tell us about a time you dealt with a difficult customer” etc etc.
If anyone can confirm that my assumption is correct about the interview format I would be grateful, it’s hopefully my first one in 15 years so don’t want to stuff it up!

No nothing, although I didn’t receive one first time so I’m not surprised!
It was a nice surprise last time but never mind! Most employers don’t pay interview travel expenses.
Does anybody know if they also have conductors at Plymouth? And can conductors move location to say, Bristol in future or do they have to apply to external recruitment like everybody else like if they were going for the TM role?

Plymouth = Train Managers only, but sign units as well.
To move location you have to apply like everyone else, when places are advertised.
In certain cases moves may happen on compassionate grounds.

I applied to Exeter and have got my assessment day in Newton Abbot 30th Jan 2019 I had no idea they had the space to complete assessments there so does anyone know where I need to go or is it a case of arriving at the front desk?

I also have my assessment on the 30th. My account page on the First Group Careers site advises - "Please wait in the ticket office hall and you will be collected by Pat Gillman."

The upstairs part of the station has been done up and there are rooms upstairs that the test centre will most likely take place, as Newton Abbot is now used for carrying certain types of training school, such as Guards Training. Hope this helps.
