Given that station staff were clearly spent some time dealing with this on the day I would have hoped that they would have alerted someone at GWR so they could be in touch with them. GWR will presumably have the passengers details from the assisted booking request.

Sussex man makes an interesting point. If the travel has to be done again as a result of the cancellation the extra cost of care at a later date would be a consequestial expense.
Yes, there's a potential future loss but none at this point (unless additional care time was paid for). I'm not making the distinction for the sake of being pedantic, but so that the OP's claim is accurate and more likely to be paid.

I am not convinced about the argument for consequential loss in the future, as I doubt this would even be classed as an essential trip, ie. it is one's choice to go on another trip. As I said, this incident would pretty much fall into the category of "**** happens sometimes", in theory at least.

I would agree with the suggestion of a nicely-worded letter pointing out the disappointment at the experience, and the impact it may have had, eg. on your son. This is likely the most effective way to generate some goodwill gesture.

I have spoken to my friend and they have sent an email to GWR detailing what happened. I will let the forum know what is the result.
