The 1057 to Bristol and 1530 to Swansea should be 800005 and 800016.

The 1257 to Bristol should be 800010 and 800023.

The 0757 and 1227 to Bristol and 1727 to Taunton should be 800011 on its own.

The 0827 and 1327 to Bristol and 1827 to Weston should be 800013 and 800017.

The 0657 to Bristol and 1130 to Swansea should be 800014 and 800018.

I think that’s it.

What's the current prediction for the last ever HST to run out of Paddington? I'm sure there will be a huge Railforums presence!

February 2019 has been mooted for the last public run. I don’t know if there will be any ‘specials’ run after this date, but I’d say there’s a fair chance there may be.

Do you happen to know the times of the 800s out of Swansea today? Many thanks in advance

A couple have already gone this morning, the 1529 up looks like it should be one but will be 43070 and 43145 instead. The 1929 up is scheduled to be 800005 and 800016.

With the juice now being on as far as Reading (and I think Didcot too) are the 800s still changing over at Maidenhead?

I think the 800s aren't cleared to use the new section of overhead until the 1st of January, so at least for the time being they'll still be changing at Maidenhead

They departed Reading on diesel when I was there about 1215 today, but that may have been due to a wiring problem near Twyford.

EDIT: 'They' being the 1211 to Swansea, which was the 1130 from Paddington (started 15 late), and the 1213 to Paddington, started from Bristol at 1100. Both left Reading at about 1221.

HST has replaced 800 on a couple of turns today but this is due to ‘staff issues’ rather than train unavailability. Don’t know the specifics before you ask!

I thought they were no longer going to Taunton.

No no, they’re just a waste of space and weight. Loco haulage should still be the way to go ;)
I would much rather have a train than no train. Whether the diesel is up front or underneath is for the birds. The IET is still fewer tons per seat than a Pendolino.

Weren't we told this new OLE kit was soopa doopa reliable and had tons of built in redundancy? Good job there aren't going to be any solely electric IET.

The Class 801 units each sport a single diesel power pack for self-recovery - we had a rather heated discussion about this recently, as if the series of OLE failures at Retford wasn’t enough to justify it.

Doesn't sound like much fun if it is turned off for 15 miles.

I wonder how quick a 9 car 801 would go on a single 750bhp diesel engine?

Quicker than having to be rescued through the downed section I guess :/

No. We were not told that the new OHLE had tons of inbuilt redundancy.

We were told that the registration of each wire was independent from the others. That is that the tensioning tails of the contact and catenary wires of any section don't cross those of the adjacent tracks and that, because of the use of portals rather than headspans in areas with three or more tracks, any wire failure over one track will not affect the tensioning and registration of the contact and catenary wires over the others.

Of course, all this assumes no 'whiplash' failure modes and any failed knitting caught up in a pantograph stays clear of the wires over the adjacent tracks.

There are some 10 Car IETs running around today, and also on other occasions, with only 5 vehicles in use due to a shortage of crew.
Despite all GWR's bragging about more seats, this is in effect an overall reduction of 3 vehicles as compared to an HST rather than an increase of 2.

Remember the coaches are different lengths, however. It's more like a reduction of 1.5 vehicles.

What is the reason that there are 9-car units rather than 10-car? Will these run to specific stations where platform length is an issue or was it just to save money? How easy would it be to add a tenth car?

I suppose a 9 car give more leeway for stations that might struggle with a 10 car, but suspect the main reason is that a 9 car on the original DFT spec draft layouts has roughly the same seating capacity as 2 x 5 cars.

Out of interest have the IET started running through to Didcot on Electric now?

I don't think so. The one I saw leaving Didcot for Paddington earlier this morning was on diesel. I read elsewhere that 2nd Jan was the start of electric working to Didcot for the 800s.

However I believe the traction changeover point is east of Moreton Cutting so non-stopping and down IETs will run through the station on diesel. I believe that up stopping IETs are permitted to raise the pantograph in the station.

No; there are traction return interference issues at Sonning, where the units are having an adverse effect on signalling equipment as they pass on Electric power. Diesel only West of Maidenhead until NR/Agility resolve the issues.
