Aye aye, Grumpy alert again! You will thoroughly read 318 pages of thread for the answer to your question or I will scold you! ;)

On that note though, I've yet to see a video of the pans going up/down at high speed, but to be fair you'd have to know exactly where it was taking place and be in exactly the right viewpoint at the right time, pretty difficult I imagine!!

The latest edition of Modern Railways implies that the Class 800 bimodes for GW are to have their diesel engines uprated. I have not read about this elsewhere, and I wonder if this will make the power output the same as the Class 802s ? Presumably this is a consequence of the the deferment of electrification to Swansea and elsewhere ?

No, it's as a result of late wiring, particularly to Bristol Parkway and Box (the 125mph stretches).
It's the engine management system that is being changed to allow full power, the maximum power was always the same as the 802s.
Plus all the intended GW 801 electrics are being built as bi-modes.
None of this is new, unless something different has been decided.
It's about 6 months since DfT made the upgrade decision, based on NR wiring delays.

Not necessarily, the pans are likely to be raised and lowered in roughly the same places, but whether the places are overlooked by a position from which you can video them is a different matter entirely.

Nice photo of 800101, I happened to be there as it arrived. Noted it left with the diesel engines running. Quite quiet - unless it was not on full power. Is it just me or are the numbers hard to find/see ?.

Are class 800's going to be a prominent in the UK as HST's are now?

It seems all inter city traffic will be done via these units on heritage lines.

Let's say it takes 5 seconds to raise/lower the pan. At 125mph you cover almost 300m in that time, making it quite difficult to get a decent video from a fixed location.

It would seem that the Class 800's start on the GWML on 16th October. Initially 4 sets (2 coupled together) on 2 diagrams and then a further 4 sets on 2 diagrams from 13th November.

Saturday diagrams start later on 28th October (4 sets) & 18th November (4 sets) and Sunday workings the days after the Saturday one's start.

A 10 car set is 260m long, so if you had a decent vantage point, you should be able to get one or the other pans being raised or lowered.

Okay, am I right? The video shows two units, each with one pan up and one pan down. Now, is it that both driving cars have a pantograph and an a.c. transformer? If so, can one pantograph supply both, or does it run with one transformer dead?

There is a 25kV bus line throughout each unit. Electricity is supplied to all the transformers from one pantograph.

Thanks Gareth.

A run is being made today, 31st July, 2017 from Stoke Gifford (Bristol) to Swansea. See Real Time Trains for schedules. It is 2x5 units in Hitachi light grey.

Is that becoming the norm now for any electric unit to be in effect two half sets coupled together?

No it isn't. AFAICT the 5 car IEP is still a single unit with two pans. Nothing has changed with normal length EMUs such as 387s or 707s as examples, and I expect the 4 car 710 will be 'normal' layout.

Obviously longer fixed formation sets such as 700s and 345s have adopted this 'half train' concept - but it will be interesting to see what happens with the 6 car 717 for GN. When that arrives, will it have one or two pans?

802002 is your missing number pal.

Each unit needs one pan up. a 10 car cannot run on one as the 25kv dose not pass through the coupler. Unless it's s rescue and the 2nd 5 is dead.
That set up of one up on each end is default from TMS but the driver can choose what pans to use for instance one has a fault etc.

Saw that by chance today on its return to Stoke Gifford, it was 800005+800006.

800004 and 800003 now safely back at home in North Pole. Working 5X29 to Paddington at 1400 and 5X30 to Tiverton Loop this afternoon. Saw it at Paddington:

May also like to ask, has any driver training occurred on the IET's yet for GWR drivers? This path looks like possible driver training into/out of North Pole to Paddington. It's a 5X however is listed as a GWR service...

And maybe driver training for the entire run from Bristol to Padd?
