The first AT300 bi-mode for Great Western Railway arrived at Port of Southampton from Japan on June 17. The five-car Class 802 is the first of 36 trains to be delivered, and is one of three pre-series trains due from the Far East. Hitachi is building the first three trains in Kasado, Japan (two five-car trains and one nine-car train), with the remaining 33 being built by Hitachi Rail Italy in Pistoia.

Today's daylight working to Penzance is 800003 and 800004, with 003 at Penzance end. :)

Lets see whether it makes it to Penzance! Plymouth and the Saltash Curve have been issues in the past, hopefully it will make it the whole way!

According to a great photo on GWR's Twitter feed, it's made it past Forder Viaduct and is in Cornwall!

Only if you get taken in by unsubstantiated gossip and rumour; and then repost it here.

Has there been any evidence of major platform alterations anywhere on the network yet, GWML or ECML that can be categorically blamed on gauging problems for the IEP project? Or is the truth of the matter that the trains have been designed to fit - successfully?

(I don't include here alterations to platform lengths for longer trains - that's not the sort of problem that prevents a train from going about the network.)

Can you quote an occasion when an IET test has not "made it the whole way" due to gaugung issues in the past?

It's a bit like the 'false jeopardy' continually implied in those useless documentaries made for an American audience isn't it.

"Dave the driver is fighting against all odds to get to Penzance during this episode. Come back after the adverts to see if he makes it in one piece..." :D

Many people watching lineside in cornwall. Arrived in PZ some quarter of an hour late which is ironic as how much quicker are these supposed to be on the PZ to Pad trip......?!!! Very quiet passing Long Rock running on 2 engines. Looked too fast for down here !

6 minutes faster.

Why was it only running on 2 engines, had they shut the other 4 engines down?

I don't think it was as much testing the timing of the new IEP's versus the HST rather than a proving trip to ensure the set(s) could make it there comfortably and prove all existing rumours about it's limitations in Cornwall wrong. The return leg was delayed as it made it's way back up through Cornwall, although this may be to do with a vehicle striking a bridge at Par today.

I managed to see the set(s) at Maidenhead returning from Penzance as I was busy during the day. The rear set looked a little dirty, not surprised as it has done decent mileage today!

Filmed, as always, with my iPhone. This also means the IEP has officially been almost everywhere on the GWR network now (in accordance to where HST's go). Just needs to get to Carmarthen from Swansea, and also complete ALL the entirity of the Cotswolds.

Not what I am hearing? ;)

It might have been the first IET to Penzance but it was also the first IET failure in Kernow!

They did get it going again after 25 minutes.

I don't think anyone at Hitachi/Agility will have felt any need whatever to prove any daft rumours wrong - the trip was part of the planned programme of testing, which, all in good time, should eventually take in all the other lines that are meant to be cleared for 800s (whether for regular use or diversions), a list that is rather longer than you seem to think:

  • Cotswold Line
  • Stroud Valley line
  • Swansea-Carmarthen
  • Torbay and Newquay branches
  • Bristol-Worcester
  • Gloucester-Newport
  • Westbury to Thingley junction and Bathampton junction
  • Vale of Glamorgan line
  • Swansea District Line
  • Reading-Waterloo (visits to 3rd rail territory so far have not covered the full route into London)
  • Empty stock route along the North & West line between Hereford and Newport.
  • Bridgend-Tondu-Margam was also on the map issued by DfT of routes to be cleared but no idea if this is going ahead

The Vale has been done.

What happens to the nose cone when they join two units together? Does it automatically retract and a coupler appear?

Another diversionary route to be done some time will be Castle Cary - Yeovil Junction - Exeter.

And I forgot the DfT map slow shows Bristol to Filton via Avonmouth being cleared as well.

So plenty of lines still to be visited - and no doubt some more silly rumours too. Heard the 'they won't fit through Ledbury tunnel' one again the other day...
