So how come there was a problem with the Class 387s not having ATP? (I mean in terms of substituting for the Class 360/2s on the ATP-equipped Heathrow branch)

I don't know what the equipment is. The Hitachi guy I spoke to said it is fitted with "equipment" that will be isolated for operation with VTEC. My guess would be signaling based.

As I understand it (and correct me if I am wrong), the class 332s weren't initially fitted with AWS as they had a special derogation to use ATP on the fast lines instead, which would suggest that it is all ATP to Heathrow.

EDIT: TPWS not AWS, as corrected below

They've always had AWS.

They are not fitted with TPWS, as they operate wholly on ATP fitted lines.

Wasn't it part down to lack of available space to have both TPWS and ATP - or was that the 360s?

That was neither, and TPWS (as far as I am aware) is esentially a low-cost derivative of ATP.

Don't know where you're getting the "lack of available space" from especially since they are full-width cabs.

It wasn't down to space in the cab, it was down to the available space for the electronics

They need to have ATP, they have it on the left side of the cab next to the lighting controls, ATP data entry. It's a standard requirement for them, because ETCS and ERTMS is many years off yet from implication.

I had some memory that ETCS was meant to supplant ATP before the IEP introduction, but that's obviously totally wrong and seems to have never been planned. No idea where I got that idea in my head from! (I certainly knew ETCS wasn't going to arrive in time and that's been obviously years away for a long time, but the IEP procurement has gone on for so long!)

ETCS on the Heathrow branch for Crossrail might be what you're thinking of? The Class 345 trains will have ETCS, TPWS, and AWS. No room for ATP as well so the branch needs converting.

I'm not sure what you mean here!

All trains that currently run into the airport tunnels must be fitted with ATP. 387s aren't, so they can't run into the tunnel.

Because the Class 387s are 110mph units, and I'm not sure what the highest allowed speed is without ATP being required.

There is an issue with Crossrail units been accepted onto the Heathrow spur to replace the 360 fleet. 360 are fitted with ATP and it was originally understood that ETCS would be available when Crossrail took over. It's deemed a backwards step with safety to replace a fleet of fully ATP capable units for ones with basic TPWS protection.

As ETCS may (and probably will) be late in been implemented it's planned for the Crossrail lines to have 'Enhanced TPWS' as a stop gap. Basically every signal will be fitted with TPWS trainstop and over speed loops. The Heathrow spur only has ATP I believe so needs TPWS installed until ETCS arrives. The Crossrail fleet can't have ATP as they have no space for it in the cabs and was ordered on the understanding it would be obsolete by then.

The first 800 built in the UK about to be revealed today, will this be the start of a sharp increase in testing/deployment?

Photographs here. Looks to have been a somewhat underwhelming event.

Meanwhile there appears to have been no main line testing this week, with 800101 and 800002 remaining at Stoke Gifford.

Is that what was expected, or is "autumn" a slip?
Autumn could mean as late as Dec 2017.
Somewhere up thread it was stated that it was originally planned that the first sets would enter service in the summer, but the delays to the energisation of the test section between Tilehurst and Didcot have caused this date to be put back to Sep 2017. As far as I know this is the only delay so far to the testing process.

Look North's Phil Bodmer has tweeted a picture of a very bland grey interior

Are VTEC's going to be grey, as that would be a bit of a come down from "Redder Hotter Awesomer"?

Sounds like a GWR one. The VTEC Ones should have an interior similar to this.

Also note the PA Blurb / xollob on the side of this 800 ''Designed in Japan, Made in Britain'' - The interior design work, and some of the exterior design work was actually done by DCA in Warwick. I suppose it's on there to make it look flash and super modern.

Here is the picture mentioned and I'd definitely agree, it looks very grey and dull in there!

No axe to grind there. God forbid they use modern bi-mode trains while the infrastructure work is done. They should be gathering dust!

Ow come off it, they are going to be used in diesel mode far far more than they were originally. Journey times will be no shorter. And they are very very heavy trains as well.

Sorry I'm committing a cardinal sin of this forum in not praising the wonderful thing that is the Hitachi bi-modes.

Doesn't look too bad to me; I'd certainly prefer that to a gaudy scheme like, say, yellow and blue...

Heck - the seats even line up to the windows for the most part as well!

I'm sure when the sets are delivered the TOCs will put their own seat covers on them and potentially change the seating layout.

Looks like there's a set on its way from Stoke Gifford to Old Dalby tonight.
