I'd completely agree with the provision of sockets and frankly find it bizzare people are arguing against it.

In fact I would wager that the majority of rail users (especially those younger) would want charging facilities. I have a portable power pack but given the option I would always use a plug and everyone having to fork out for a battery is not appealing. I would go as far as suggesting providing USB sockets which negates the need for an actual plug.

Earlier this year I was camping and hiking and travelled to/from our destination via train. Some one mentioned above that lacking charge could somehow be poor trip planning. Well my plan involved charging on the train. I certainly don't want to be carrying a battery pack with me while hiking up hills (a charger is significantly lighter and can charge more).

Just to clarify, I'm not arguing against installing power sockets, I'm quite keen to have that facility available to me. I'm making the point that some things in life are needs and some things are wants - power sockets for passengers are wants rather than needs.

I'll give you that it's a want, rather than a need. But it's fairly high up the list of things that people want.

The issue is that I think it'll only be wanted for about the next 10 years if that.

Mind you, 13 amp sockets are better than USBs. The USB standard is changing, and the new one is not compatible with the old sockets.

If we're going to continue down this ridiculous suggestion of requiring passengers to carry portable battery recharging solutions with them, can I then remove the buffet and catering trolley from vehicles on the basis they should also be bringing their own food, using flasks, etc.

Another thing they could do is remove toilets and just do a few PSA's over the telly and at stations reminding people to go before they travel! That would reduce the weight of the train :lol:

Hmm... USB albeit a world standard has been around for just under 20 years, and if I'm not mistaken, isn't very good at charging laptops. Whilst the three pin 240v BS 1363 Type G plug has been around since 1947 and can be used for laptops.... Although also useful for styling tongues, irons, kettles, trouser presses and lots of other inappropriate stuff....

We've seen phones and laptops get thinner and thinner rather than having better and better battery life, because there are diminishing returns of adding extra battery life. Making a laptop last significantly more than 12 hours isn't particularly useful because the vast majority of people will be in a situation to be able to charge it again within that time. It would be better, from a user's perspective, to be able to charge it back up to full again very quickly rather than having to carry around a heavier device which wouldn't really make their lives any easier. Consider the fact that Apple aim to keep each iPad's battery life 10 hours long, even though they could easily bring out modern versions with much larger batteries which would then only be the size of the original model.

In a similar way, I don't see there being a lot of effort being put into getting electric cars to have ranges significantly beyond what's currently possible in a Tesla Model S, as if you're driving for more than 200 miles at a time you're meant to stop for a rest and that time can be used to rapidly charge the car back up again. Equally there would be no point making an IPEMU with a massively long battery range, as it will be possible in the vast majority of cases to charge at intermediate points.

Adding in power sockets isn't going to cause anyone any harm and if it means people are happier to use the railway, then all the better. There's a clear demand for charging facilities as aircraft and buses are also seeing them fitted, and for some people the ability to keep their devices charged throughout a trip is a deal-breaker. Also, if you make it possible for people to distract themselves (more people would play more immersive games and watch more movies on their phones/tablets if they didn't have to worry about the battery being hammered) they'll be less likely to complain about the railway. Much of the bad rep the Voyagers have is just because people are already quite annoyed about having to sit on the floor due to overcrowding, so they then care about all the other minor things which are also wrong.

I'm amazed that we are arguing about the pennies required to pay for plugs/ chargers on these new trains, but then since we are seeing complains about every other flipping feature of them, I probably shouldn't be surprised :lol:

re: Voyagers - my default defence of them is that the significant lack of seats on the XC core mean that people are more likely to notice problems with the reservations, more likely to notice the toilet smell (as they are quite likely to have been standing in the corridor outside the toilets)... if there were sufficient seats than people would't notice these things so much.

It's the "broken window" approach - once people are dissatisfied with one aspect of a train, they are significantly more likely to get annoyed by minor things. Thankfully, IEP seems to have learnt most of the lessons from Voyagers.

Remember that it isn't just commuters that use their laptops, as (especially on long distance journeys like the ones that the class 800's will be running) lots of travelers would rather look at their laptop than out the window. (You can't now go and say they should just be told to look out the window) The fact that people forget to charge their laptops isn't something that can be helped either, and the fact is that mains is the more commonly used (and preferred) method of charging. All these are just plain and simple facts.

Public transport should not tell people what their needs are, they should be designed to fit customer's needs. Yes power points aren't a necessity, but passengers use them. There is not a trend approaching where it is now cool to have a battery pack, and VTEC and GWR and the like don't have time to encourage the use of a certain product, that is just silly. People like and use power points on trains regularly, and since this train is rather basic anyway (our high speed train system will now fall further out of league with the rest of Europe), you would think it is the least they can do?

If I've got a film/programme on a tablet/ laptop to watch then I'm not going to be so fussed about an unobstructed window seat.

There seems to be a fascination with some enthusiasts with telling the general public where they ought to be going and how they ought to be behaving - witness the snooty comments about "people travelling all that way to watch men in shorts kicking a ball around" when there's a thread about the railway's inability to cope with football traffic. Much better to see how people actually want to travel and reflect that demand (which will increasingly mean some electrical charging facilities onboard).

What is needed is a clear message from IEP operators about suit case sizes, tell passengers what size bag will fit in the overhead rack, what size bag will fit in the luggage stack, and what happens if they bring a walk-on wardrobe with them.

I've been on more than my fair share of trains with baggage everywhere - in the aisles, on seats and tables, jammed into toilets, disabled areas and bits of the buffet, but I can hand on heart say I've never seen one of these trains with every luggage rack and storage space actually fully utilised, quite often luggage racks are empty because people can't get their suitcases into them, a particular issue with Voyager and Pendolino fleets, who have an interior that could only have been designed by the Pinball Wizard.

If people start to carry the correct size of bag or suitcase for the train, there's genuinely not an issue with the amount of luggage space on board most trains in use today, and certainly not with IEP, which is exceptionally generously provisioned in comparison to some trains in operation.

Perish the thought that we improve the on-board experience for passengers, when they should clearly all carry the same tech that railway enthusiasts lug around?

What next? Complaints about announcements being made, since the passengers should carry paper timetables with them and use GPS on their phone to know which station will be next?

There's enough of an undercurrent of "the railway is there for the benefit of its staff, rather than for the benefit of the public" on some threads, but this one is running them close!

Indeed there is a lot of work going on in that direction. The latest generation of handsets charge in a fraction of the time taken by older ones.

My latest handset takes around 3min to charge 2%. It may be quicker, if the battery is smaller to begin with.

There has been a huge amount of work on batteries and yet they remain the single biggest constraint to mobile technology. Whoever cracks this one will become fantastically rich, not just from phones and laptops, but also renewable energy.

However it is a very tough nut to crack and for the foreseeable charger sockets are essential kit for all long distance trains, without even thinking about laptop batteries.

What is your point there? Who will regret what?

On a road coach the only power available is from the 24v battery, so obviously this is what would be used. What relevance does this have to a train, which has a mains voltage supply on board?

The presumption seems to be that providing power to each seat 'costs pennies'. So those pennies have to pay for wiring (a considerable amount), circuit protection, ground leakage protection, the weight of all the above, pluse a not insignificant load on the limited power source which also has to propel the trains. I can't see this provision not having a cost impact on the provision of services.

There's no harm having power sockets, but I do think USB is the way forward.

USB solutions can provide 5, 9, 12 and 18V at varying amperages. My phone can take 5V/3A and charges from 0-100 in 90 minutes (but given it slows at the end to protect the battery, it doesn't fully highlight the level of charge you can get from just 15-20 minutes).

Many tablets, laptops (e.g. Apple's newest MacBook), phones, cameras, portable batteries, selfie sticks (!) and so on will use USB. It's easier to carry a USB lead than a mains adapter, given our adapters are quite chunky. You also don't need a transformer in your bag if the step down is behind the USB port anyway.

Of course the most simple solution is a 240V power socket with USB ports too. Then you can connect a USB lead to whatever you want, whether full-size USB, microUSB or USB-C etc. When these trains are half way through their working life, I think people will carry mains power adapters even less.

The average phone charger is going to draw 5W or less, a laptop charger is somewhere around 60W. So realistically you're looking at more like 2kW per coach rather than 20kW - nowhere near as much load as HVAC (also the HVAC weighs considerably more), yet nobody seems to suggest removing those systems to save fuel.

My phone charger is 15W and I think we'll see a gradual increase as more phones support faster charging, but overall the usage will still be relatively low.

How did you arrive at 20kW?

The power rating on a typical mobile charger is around 0.15A at 240V, which is only 36W. To consume 20kW would require more than 500 such chargers to be running per carriage at any one time, that is each passenger charging an average of around 10 mobiles at any one time. I suggest that your "sensible" diversity rating is anything but.

That's all assuming 100% utilisation of sockets - they're used, but not that well used, I should expect energy consumption averages out to the equivalent of maybe 1 to 2 kW/hr per day. It's certainly not something that feeds into traction electricity consumption, it's so negligible.

A 5 car Voyager, when new, consumed 100kW solely on lighting. I've not been on one in a little while, so don't know if LED bulbs etc have made an appearance, but there are other issues more worthy of tedious obsession.

You will, quite comfortably, use more fuel running coupler doors open on IEP for a handful of days per year, than you will running electrical sockets all year.

The coach company will regret installing standard USB A sockets as these will be rare in maybe 5-10 years as the new reversible USB C becomes standard.

It would if every socket was drawing 2A. But it won't be, because on a given train I notice maybe 10% of sockets in use if that, and most of those are only charging mobile phones which won't require anywhere near 2A @ 230V.

So? Not everyone uses the sockets for the whole journey. The chances of every single plug socket being used at every single moment of the journey is 0.

People use them. Not 24/7/365/10/10/10/7,790,000, but people do use them. They are well used. They are popular. They don't really make much difference to the stability of the train as a whole. It will improve (or rather, not make worse) the passenger experience. So why not?

It appeared to be based on my suggestion of a 2A breaker on each socket - but that isn't how diversity works - after all, most house ring circuits have a 32A breaker but 13A fuses in the plugs at each of about 10 double sockets - that's a more sensible diversity ratio - when was the last time your 32A sockets breaker blew in your house because of genuine overload? I've never seen that happen, ever.

I bought a few USB A to C cables so I can charge my new phone from any existing USB port. When I travel now, I just pack one of these with my USB A to micro USB leads for other devices.

Yes, one day you could change to USB C ports but it's not essential. Think how many USB hubs, chargers, mains sockets with USB ports are in use right now.

Likewise people carry USB A to Lightning for iOS devices, although I expect Apple will go USB C soon.

Yes it was based on that. If the sockets are set to a nominal 2A trip, then 20kW represents an allowance of 50% for a typical 80 outlets, (assuming that one is demanded for every seat). Now if passengers take up the 'offer' of 2A capability on sockets, how will they be protected. 2A breakers on each outlet maybe. You couldn't rely on correct fusing on every device as typically, 13A fuses are fitted to things like hair tongs of 250W or even baby milk heaters. Once standard outlets become available on busy trains, the cat is out of the bag and they will be used for anything and everything that can be taken onto a train. Usage on long journeys could rise well above figures like 10% if that is typical at present. Most passengers don't carry devices to plug in if the availability isn't guaranteed. That would change in a relatively short time. Given the frequency of complaints about AC being set too cold for some, there will be mini heaters brought along by some.
Each passenger operates as an individual user, unlike on a domestic installation where an overload becomes apparent to all and somebody has to reset the MCBs on the circuit. If some sort of diversity is applied, it will involve overcurrent trips for groups of outlets, and those trips are unlikely to be accessible to passengers. Similarly, ELCBs will need to be fitted so how will they be controlled?
So if their use becomes universal, the system will be quite complex, and may spend a more time out of use than has been seen to date.

GNER had plug sockets on their trains long before the Mallard refurbishment (who can forget the brilliant gold colour sockets from B&Q) so that's 10 years at least, probably closer to 15 now.

There's really not been an appreciable increase in use over that time.

I'm somewhat at a loss as to how we've ended up in a detailed discussion of the generalities of power sockets on a thread that is about the new Class 800 family of trains? Obviously threads like this will drift with time but we do need them to stay vaguely on topic.

Please could we refrain from further discussion of power sockets unless it's directly relevant to the Class 800s. People are of course welcome to start a new thread but they may also wish to check out a thread here that is currently running in General Discussion about power sockets.

It is the argument for longer trains. They have got shorter since the 1950s. Look at old photographs of trains like the Royal Scot, which could run to 18 coaches, and remember that the terminal platforms were also occupied by the locomotives which brought in the stock and hauled the train, another two coach lengths.

If space for large items is provided in a van, then it does not need to be provided in racks in every vehicle.

It is also the argument for retaining old stock as the capital costs have long since been written off. With new stock costing what it does, a mixed-age fleet reduces the average cost per vehicle within the fleet.

26 metre vehicles such as the SNCF corail have 11 bays which give 88 seats in facing bays if they are arranged that way (plus a toilet at each end), so there is something odd about the 800 vehicles if the seats are having to be crammed to get the same number in.

An interesting point. H & V is a significant proportion of the energy use of a train (you can work it out - a mark III is around 18kW )

The use of electricity for heating is wasteful due to thermodynamic and transmission losses. There could be scope for heat recovery. Heat pumps? Waste heat has been used in the past - for example in resistance-controlled EMUs and some DMUs.

But by the same token, accelerating and stopping a large mass of heating fluid, along with the pipework for same isn't going to be that efficient either.

Why this fetish for the 1950s and long trains? It's not the 1950s any more. It's 2015 and instead of a small number of very long Euston-Glasgow and Kings Cross-Edinburgh trains each day, we have Anglo-Scottish services, of two-thirds or three-quarters the length of your 18 coaches at far higher frequencies. And you can say the same for long-distance services out of Paddington.

Sorry, but not all Corail stock had toilets at each end and the Intercites specification ones still in service seat 74 people at most in standard, with lots of those being airline seats - see seating plan below. I'm not sure about the current capacity of those in use on regional services but if they do seat more it presumably means yet more airline seats and nowhere for people to put their luggage.... Also, while the initial batches of Corails built had 11 bays in standard (actually windows, as there were always lots of airline seats in them from day one) and 10 in first class, the later versions used the same 10-window bodyshell for both classes.

And who says the seats are being crammed into the IEPs? A few posters here perhaps, but the Modern Railways article has the following to say about legroom, which doesn't suggest they are crammed in or cramped:

Bay seats generally align with windows and legroom is excellent, with 150cm bays and 78cm airline. You have to go back to the 1930s or travel to Europe to see numbers like that.
