If the IEP order such bad value it's then surprising that GWR has ordered AT300's.

The IEP procurement process could perhaps be considered bad value. That doesn't mean AT300s in and of themselves are bad value if procured using a more traditional process, now the design and test work is paid for by the original contract.

The point was more to do with the amount of money that the cost per seat would be compared with the cost of a ticket. Therefore what appears to be expensive now will not be expensive in 25 years time.

Likewise comparing the cost of old trains with brand new trains isn't the same, especially as the new trains include the cost of maintenance.

If the IEP order such bad value it's then surprising that GWR has ordered AT300's.

It would be interesting to see if there is any contract differences to GWR ordering the AT300's to the DFT ordering the IEP trains? But apologies now, if this has already been mentioned in this thread.

The trains in the IEP are paid for according to the diagrams they fulfil. The are no published figures for the capital cost of the trains - and therefore NO figures for the capital cost per seat are available.

The payment made for each diagram that the trains fulfil covers design, component testing, manufacture, shipping, assembly, type approval testing, the cost of the three maintenance depots and some of the costs of the new factory, running maintenance, consumables, cleaning and the interest on the money Hitachi has had to borrow to pay for all the costs incurred before it receives the first payment when the first train enters service.

No information has been made available regarding the way the Train Service Provision payments for the IEP will vary with time over the next 27.5 years - the headline figure published is the Net Present Value of the whole contract. One would expect the payments to be linked to inflation in some form or other but it is impossible to say whether the trains will become relatively cheaper in future or not.

In addition, if a buyer for any item (train, car, fridge, microwave oven, whatever) is not prepared to accept any risks and states that it has to be available when agreed (up to 27.5 years away), then he will pay through the nose in order to sleep easy.

The IEP is eye-wateringly expensive because the DfT has loaded ALL of the costs since Agility Trains was selected as preferred bidder in 2009 as well as all the design, operational and financial risks onto the cost per diagram. Agility Trains/Hitachi will have been racking up costs for some 8 or 9 years before it receives a penny. Work out what that is in interest alone.

The whole point of the numbers that I quoted from the ORR data is that they cover both the capital lease costs of the stock AND the maintenance costs. They are the costs to the TOC of running the trains.

The AT300s are being ordered under a completely different financial regime - it is the usual structure whereby a ROSCO, in this case Eversholt, is financing the purchase of the trains, 173 vehicles at a cost of £361 million. Maintenance will be arranged under a separate contract. Risks are shared between the parties.

Roger Ford did an adjusted cost-per-vehicle in Informed Sources a few years ago. If I recal correctly, it came out at about 2.6 million per vehicle.

The variation order is going to send the already very high costs even higher. The whole GW project is becoming a bit of a joke really. But they are committed now so however high the costs get for either the SET's or the electrification they need to finish it. If the costs are not going to be passed onto the passenger it means the taxpayer is going to have to pay out.

Did the class 800 cause the issues with the OHLE this morning for the Heathrow Express & Connect services?

How? It's at the depot for staff training there, not running on the main line.

The comment above, was that the class 800 was outside the depot, which could have meant that it was outside the grounds of the depot or just outside of the depot building........

Oh come off it. I think someone might have noticed if it was running up and down on the GWML - and posted about it here.

It was outside the depot building. Don't think it had anything to do with the OLE issue later on during the day.

Was not back in view by sunset (17:00 ish 1/12/2015). I walked along the canal on the North side of the GWML past both sheds (East and West of the West of London line.) to have a look.

My how things have changed at Old Oak Common though. Bit hard to see as it got dark but I had forgotten the factory had gone - replaced with a pile of concrete tunnel lining segments and a travelling crane that at first sight made my think of a container yard !. I remember walking along that canal in 1975 or thereabouts on a long hot day and seeing the last of the Hymeks (Class 35 D7000-D7100 iirc) in a line looking somewhat bedraggled. Will be HSTs next sadly !. Er eventually.

Occurs to me that if the 800 was to go out on test it would be overnight so it would probably disappear somewhere inside a shed as the morning progressed. Just my theory and no one has reported it in action yet anyway.

The main testing will be on Sodor.

Railway Gazette visited the North Pole Depot today and were allowed to look inside unit 800.002. They shared a few pictures on Twitter, https://twitter.com/railwaygazette/status/672024453291909120

Are GWR going to be allowed on the say of the interior of future units? Seems interesting that what they've fitted to First on their HSTs is so different to this. Virgin is also apparently currently fitting similar leather seats to their HSTs and 225s (to be revealed on December 14th).

I believe the answer to that is mostly no as the DfT seem to have had most of the say on the interior (hence the lack of buffets). Yet interestingly Virgin obviously have persuaded the DfT to let them make significant changes to what the DfT originally specified (hence the inclusion of buffets).

A few things jump out from the interior picture:

  1. The seats appear to have reservation ticket slots. I would really expect a new intercity train to use electronic reservations.
  2. I can't see any tables or reading lights anywhere. The closely-spaced single seats with no tables in particular don't look very "first class".
  3. The overhead luggage rack on the RHS of the photo appears to terminate just before the camera, meaning that at lease the nearest pair of seats to the camera have no luggage rack.

All these things are rather disappointing for the first class carriages of a large fleet of new intercity trains, and by implication standard class will be even worse.

The technical specification mandates seatback ticket slots as redundancy for the electronic reservation system. Can't see why that's such a problem.

Seems a very good idea.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
As for single seats, some of us who usually travel alone really like those for the privacy they offer. A certainty of one of those might well attract a First Class fare out of me.

Given the standard class seats are a variation of the ironing boards on the 377's, 387's, 700's etc, I'm not getting my hopes up too high either.

Do you mean the closely-spaced single seats just like those offered on GWR HSTs? Or East Coast HSTs for that matter.

As ainsworth74 suggests, that does not look like a fully-finished interior - hardly surprising as it's one of a handful of pre-series production sets, which are intended for testing and staff familiarisation at the moment.

And how do you expect to know what sort of tables there are at the single seats when you can't see the backs of the seats?

PS: We've already seen what standard looks like, although the picture is hardly of the greatest quality.
