Hi all,

I was wondering, with Crossrail operating services every 5 minutes to and from every intermediate station to and from Reading and Paddington, what the purpose of having the Class 365 in GWR's fleet is? The Class 387 will operate Oxford and services to Swindon and Newbury, the 800 (801 +802) will do long haul... so where does the GWR Class 365 fit in?

Thanks,
Leo

Not sure where you have read that this section of Crossrail will be every 5 Min. The proposed off peak customer service west of Paddington is 4tph terminating Heathrow, 2tph terminating Maidenhead and 2tph to Reading. During peak times a further 2tph will terminate at West Drayton, which will lead to 10tph between Paddington and Hayes/Harlington at peak times, and 8tph off-peak; beyond here though there will only be 4tph for most of the route.

My question is, even with 4TPH from Crossrail from Padd to Reading, will GWR even bother operating stopping services to Reading anymore once Crossrail is online?

The Reading-Paddington (2tph) stopping services are being replaced by Crossrail. The Oxford-Paddington (2tph) stopping services will continue to run.

I'd emphasise again (even though Mojo already pointed it out) that it is only half of the 4 tph Maidenhead Crossrail service that was extended, so that's only 2 tph to Reading.

There is also the possibility that GWR remaining EMU services, both 387 and 365 will be much longer than current trains, at least 8 and possibly 12 cars with the 387s, so the quantity of units allowed for is almost certainly correct.

I would hope that a few people would notice that they are a little quieter!

Depends which carriage you are in; the clever electronics cause a rather distinct beat... ;)

Well the cabs on the 365s were altered a while back, cant remember why but they're now visually alot different to the rest of the x65 fleet. Hideous they are...hope GWR restore them to resemble a Networker again.

Will we see GWR operating the 12 car Class 387's operating out to as far as Bristol Temple Meads perhaps? If the Class 365's are assigned the Oxford route, there isn't much left for the 387 to cover if Reading is covered by Crossrail trains.

As I see it:
  • Oxford-Paddington (Fast) 1tph, Class 387s
  • Newbury-Paddington (Fast East of Reading), 1tph, Class 387s
  • Oxford-Paddington (Stopping), 2tph, Class 365s / 387s
  • Basingstoke-Reading, 2tph, Class 365s
  • Henley Branch, Class 365s
  • Windsor Branch, Class 365s

I can see a 365 being used on a Newbury - Reading stopping service, in addition to the 387(s) on a semi-fast Newbury - Paddington (i.e. Same calling pattern as the current Bedwyn - Paddington service east of Newbury), timed to connect with the DMU shuttle from Newbury to Bedwyn.

With all the upgrades and with planning for increased demand, the timetable today does not have to be the future timetable

No, 387s will not run to Swindon (well, never say never, but they aren't planned to in regular service).

It seems to have been mentioned by DfT in the 2014 consultation response:

SLC 3: December 2018 to franchise end date

In December 2018, the timetable change will see the culmination of all the enhancement work and new and cascaded rolling stock in a recast of the timetable and 110 mph operation, providing additional capacity and faster journeys.

London & Thames Valley

To build on the enhancements in SLC2, the December 2018 timetable change will see 110 mph operation on the Main (fast) lines enabling faster Oxford and Newbury services as well as additional fast peak hour trains from Swindon and Didcot to London Paddington. EMU trains will operate in 12 car formation on the Main lines and 8 car on the Relief (slow) lines.

I've read somewhere else that it is intended to run peak direction only fast EMU commuter services from Didcot and/or Swindon, I'll try and find it in the morning.

Yes they will. In a series of presentations GWR gave last year, ahead of the new franchise, they repeated what was in the consultation response quoted above as to how the December 2018 LTV service group timetable will look.

The idea no doubt being to give passengers from Swindon a couple of nice empty trains to use instead of having to get on trains that have come from further west and are already busy.

It's also been mentioned on another thread that 365s or 387s are going to work through to Cardiff on Rugby International days.

The GW DA did not have the 365 or 387 units going to Swindon (or west of) in either the draft December 2017 or 2018 timetables. All services between Swindon and London in the draft December 2018 timetable were 800 or 801 units.

Presumably more likely to be 387s than 365s, given their higher top speed. (110mph vice 100)

As they regularly send out 2-car sets on the main line stopping services at present, that's not too difficult.
