Took one of these earlier on, and it had 1st and the Chiltern type air cooling system with locked windows. The latter was working unlike every 166 I've ever been on. It had a FGW interior, though.

Is it a trial or are all being so fitted?

Isn't 1st being removed?

First is being reinstated in the Thames valley i believe.

First had been declassified, but there were never actually any changes to the interior, bar a change in the signage. It appears it is now being reinstated in order to provide First Class on the services that previously would have used the 166s now transferred to Bristol. Air Cooling is planned to be fitted to all the 165s.

Unlikely. The services they are operating are largely the ones which had First Class removed a while back. The services that have First Class will be run by 80x trains (Bedwyn and Oxford Fasts) or stay as Turbos (Reading-Gatwick). It is just a few of the semi fast Paddington-Didcot peak services that have had First Class removed.

Some 165s are coming out of the works with the system now, not sure which numbers, but I know the one that crashes at Paddington has it in one coach only.

That's a shame (having first class reinstated) as the declassified ex first class seats were really comfy, and a real bonus if you got one!

My only gripe with the 165s was that the large hopper window latches were a really poor design, some couldn't stay shut. Just needed a redesigned latch in my opinion, not air chillers.

165112 has it :)

I never noticed it tbh, the 165s are the opposite of the 387s, designed to provide a large amount of seating capacity for the Thames Valley stoppers (which they did very well) they aren't so suited for the longer distance stuff.

As does 165117. The test of its effectiveness will come in the summer of course. 166s seem to have a system that works well at cooling about 40% if the time, but sometimes that 40% (which is not good enough of course) is lowered further by all or some of the windows being opened.

I see more GWR 165's coming out of the works with air cooler installed. How many units has it been installed to this date?

(moved from South Wales Metro thread)

Whilst I am pleased to see the new Hitachi Inter City Express Trains enter service, I note that trains to be used on the Cardiff > Bristol > Bath > Salisbury > Southampton > Portsmouth route will see a downgrade from 158’s to old Thames Turbo commuter trains (165/6’s). Whilst these will offer more seats (jammed in as 5 across) and become 5 coach trains, they are hardly the wonderful trains that one would expect to link these major cities and induce traffic off the roads.

Yes, being very glad to see the back of them from my neck of the woods, it is fairly odd to see them now being cascaded to be used without a proper internal refit on those long-distance routes. Replacing the seating with decent 2+2 (with some tables), and the windows with new ones without the hoppers at the top (and no, just locking those closed, as has been done, is not good enough, especially since in my experience so far (on the refurbed 165/1 I went on for a mercifully short hop between Oxford and Didcot the other day, after the IET service I was due to travel on was cancelled due to a train fault) they are so badly sealed that the wind noise is still substantial, and I imagine they'll be leaking and draughty again before too long ……… and as for the amount of noise coming out of the air cooling unit , well, something was already wrong there …) … would lead to quite a decent train for those routes (coincidentally not very different from a Chiltern Mainline 168/0).
